I have a BIG problem, I will be working on a model, i will save, and when i come back to the file, its invisible!!!!

it shows up in the hypergraph, when you select it in the hypergraph you get manipulators and everything, but you can see the model, wireframe, or ANYTHING!!! i have tried saving as ASCII and BINARY and still it happens!

I am getting no where b/c i will work, then save, then come back to the file and its empty!! then i have to reopen an OLD file, startover, save and it STILL DOES IT! I dont know what to do, or why its happening...what should i do?? this SUX!

Try :
Display > Show > All
or press "A" on one of your viewport :)

Its a HUGE glitch in Maya which i stumble over from time to time myself. I havent found any cure for it whatsoever, only thing that can help is saving all your meshes to obj once you think there might be something wrong.

Interesting how such a bug could be ignored by Alias.

I came across this problem once and after an exhaustive search into what went wrong, I finally found out that Maya had just decided to detach everything from the initialShadingGroup (lambert1). Try picking your mesh in the outliner and assigning the initialShadingGroup to it....it worked for me.

Spacefork, I've had that problem before too.

I thought this was a different issue because even though he wrote 'can', I read it to be 'can't' see the mesh when he selects it in the hypergraph.

I'm curious where the model originated. Was it entirely done within Maya, or were portions imported from another program? I've seen the problem Spacefork spoke of many times, but it was always on models imported from other sources.

Electrofirma, I obviously can't speak for blackSTATIK's model, but when it happened to me, the model was a Maya original and not imported.

Good luck blackSTATIK! :D

hey guys,

my model was done complete in Maya 5. I never had this prob with 4 or 4.5, but seems to be the norm in 5....im about to try all your suggestions...wish me luck

interesting...i select the model in the hypergraph and i can see my manipulators, but no object. i select the shading network for the model, then go to SELECT OBJECTS WITH MATERIAL and it doesnt select the model....hmm....

i have NO IDEA whats wrong here....

Have you try import your saved files ? (rather than open) ? :)

Send us the .mb file and let's see if we can fix it.

very funny, i was gonna post something similar...

i imported a scene file from Maya 4 to Maya 5 and since i have some bones not visible. i can select and move them from the outliner, they just don't show in the viewport anymore.

They also appear greyed out in the Hypergraph, but are set on visible and are not templated or such...

Have you tried right clicking the object in the hypergraph and picking 'Show'.

If it is hidden it will appear grayed, the manipulators will show, but nothing else.

EDIT: Maelstorm, that reply was for blackSTATIC, since you did obviously say yours were set to visible.

OK, thanks... Since I've only seen imported stuff get detached from its shading group, I had always assumed that it was caused by the other program. In fact, now that I think about it more... In my case I'm certain the problem was from the other program.

I only saw the problem when importing Poser geomtry, and never saw the problem after setting everything to lambert1 and using 'optimize scene size' to wipe out all of the default shading information that came in with the model.

Here is my file. For those that want to give this a shot, go ahead. If this is a common problem, i hope we can find a fix for it and post it to help others as well. Thanx alot everyone, i have tried all i know to do.

Here´s what I did:

Display>Show>ShowGeometry>All

Saved as a new file. It opened ok!!

objects will not render, even in the viewport if they are not connected to shading group. they can have a materiel...but if that material is not connected to a shading group it wont display.

but yeah, in this case show all works.

heck yeah! I cant wait to get home and try it! I wonder what makes the file just disappear like that when you open it? hmm, anyways, ITS SOLVED! :buttrock:

Well...this is what I got out of the deal...

Is there something I'm missing here....?

Is this your model blackSTATIK?

Never mind I see you got it....

In the channel editor I saw that you had visability turned off also...

blackSTATIK
08-19-2003, 05:27 PM
haha...im sure that probably looked pretty wierd!..haha. those are just some sphere i was using for eyes a few versions back..haha, sorry.

So you did get the model to show up?

Keep your channel editor open in the side panel...usually where the attributes panel is on default ,so you can see the information on your models, lights and basically everything in your scene.
Just scroll down to 'visability:on/off' and make sure its on.
Thats what I used to do in Lightwave all the time for poly counts etc.

No,I stopped at a few itrems...
If you are still having probs with this and you are sure there is actually a model in there I will open it up again.
I just assumed that this is what the problem was.

hey guys, that still didnt work....are you all able to see the model? not the cube, or the two spheres...but the big muscle bound model?

MasonDoran
08-20-2003, 10:33 AM
u mean cube? (not the nurbs box)

sorry mate....i looked at the shape node in the connection editor and u have only 3 vertices.....i dont know what u did to it....but the shape node is F*cked -meaning it is useless. The History is screwing things up for you...

but not all is lost...

Go into the hypergraph and display the input/ouputs of the character...find the greyed out polyobject.....open the attribute editor and under Object Display turn off Intermediate object.

You will then see the model BEFORE the history is applied...its kinda like a referance object so that maya can story the history.

Now either disconnect this object from the history nodes and then apply a shader to it and go about your business....OR try going back in the history nodes and delete one by one the nodes to find the offending history node.

warning: Delete History command will delete the intermediate object so u have to do it by hand

then....just export as .obj and import and all should be good....

-the hips and stomach are a bit out of proportion to the character....

2byts,

Thanx a lot for your help. thanx to everyone for their help. I have already moved past the point i was at in version 090 of the model. I just hope this doesnt happen again, but i will be sure to save every few tweaks.

Yes, im not sure what 090 of the model looked like, but i posted my model http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81771&highlight=hulk and quite a few people said the hips were too low as well. I have raised the hips and i like it MUCH better now, so, thank you for the crits. Im UVing him now, so, it shouldnt be long b4 i post some renders. again, thanx so much for the help!! :D

Wow...
I wish I had investigated further!

Thats an excellent model blackSTATIK.
I agree about the hips but the overall form and style is really unique.

Keep us updated on this.
I rarely go to the gallery/wip sections but I want to see more of this model.

Looking great!

Thanx a lot wgreenlee1 ! I havent had the time to sit down and really get it finished. I have been spending about 30 min. a day or so on it about 5 times a week. I wish I had more time, b/c i am REALLY PUMPED about animating him!!..haha, the plan is, i am going to composite him into a film, and have him animated and doing a lip sync, responding to someone or imitating someone in film. I really cant wait, im excited about it.

I have a few sketches of how he will walk, and its much like a gorilla moves.

The only thing that is really buggin me right now is the hands. This is my first humanoid character, so, i have never really modeled hands. I had such a hard time with it. I may try to remodel them....we will see how it goes :)

I will def keep everyone posted! Thanx a lot again!
