View Full Version : Old 32bit programs on Win7 64bit?
Ultimatum 11-12-2009, 10:06 AM Hi,
Have any of you experiences of runnung old 32bit XP-programs on Win7 64bit machine?
Have you had problems or do they run smoothly?
I´m changing to Win7 64 and have only used XP32. I´m mainly concerned about my old 32bit programs, such as :
- Adobe Creative Suite CS1
- After Effects 7.0
- Lightwave 8.2 (I´m going to update to 9.6, so this is not a problem)

They all work. You only need to watch out for reeeeally old 16 bit installers.
I had a bit of a bother with some installers that checked for the windows version and refused to install on Vista and newer since the version numbers were not listed. Thankfully those were MSI installers that were easily patched.
16 Bit installer for 32 bit apps are another matter as Mash points out, they will not run on any 64 bit Windows, however those are only used by realy old apps.
Cheers

Thanks for the info.
One other question :
I will get a Win7 64bit 8Gb RAM system.
I know XP 32 detects only 4 GB of RAM.
When I run 32 programs (like Photoshop) on the new 64bit system, will the 4GB limit still be valid or is the 64bit OS the only thing that matters?

I'd upgrade Photoshop or the whole suite if you have it. When I had Photoshop CS2 there were problems with the license resetting itself on Vista. Windows 7 and Vista have the same kernel and API so it'll probably happen in Windows 7 as well. Not a big deal because you can install the license again, but when you run out of activations from Adobe and call their support they're not very willing to give your license more activations. They said this was a problem with anything older than CS3 on anything newer than XP. I would have to call them every few months to get it working again, did this for about a year before I finally upgraded and the problem went away. Also Photoshop CS4 is 64-bit so you can use as much memory as the system can hold.
Other applications are hit and miss. Some will work and some won't but the majority of applications not meant for Vista and Windows 7 will still work on them. If its a show stopper be sure to test it ahead of time and don't just assume that it works. Cheers!

Oh, ok.
So I should probably update all of my programs to 64bit then.
Thanks.

If there is a 64 bit version. For example in the CS4 suite only Photoshop is 64 bit. Though AE and many others are supposed to move to 64 bit for CS5. That is still a year off.
