View Full Version : render wireframe?
mallen 08-18-2003, 04:35 AM How can I render my model as a wireframe. All I can figure out is to use the cartoon function. Do I have to use a plugin?

There have been a few threads on this, but unfortunately I don't remember details. You might try a search and see if you can turn up one of the gone by. I am fairly certain that you need a plugin to do a clean job. I'm sure one of the gang will show up with better info than I can give...:p

the toon will render you a nice simple wireframe, or you can render as viewport, it's on the first page of the render settings dialog. failing that you could buy Paul Everett's excellent wireshader, or use the atom object to make an object wireframe, or use the wire mode of Tessa (part of the free ditools package), and i don't know if it might be possible to use 12point0 to do this, or you can simply use my free maxuv tools to maximize all the polys in your object, then use the bhodinut tiles shader to draw edges on each and every poly... well anyhoe, hopefully something in there will do what you want. good luck :)

I read about the comic render in version 7 in the help file. But Cannot find the option in the render settings under "effects". There is a cell render option but no comic render in version 7 and 8.
Also how do you get the render as viewport to be saved?

Screen shot of my render setting screen is below.
Select the "edges" box to get a wire frame.

And if you are using HyperNURBS don't forget to
switch off the subdivision before rendering the wire.
Otherwise you will get a subdivided wire which is
not very useful.

I selected edges but it still didn't give me the option for "comic".

Hmm..., do you want render comic style or a wireframe ?
If comic style than the build in toon renderer is not first
choice. You have to turn on "color", "illumination" and
"outline". Turn off "edges". With quantize you can tweak
the blending of the colors.

Okay, while we're on that topic bob, what does quantize do exactly? It's shown in the cel render screenshot in the manual, but there is no desciption there of what it does. I admit to not having tweaked it at all. What can you tell me?

If you switch on quantize you will have access to
the steps field. There you can set how many colors
are used for the toon renderer. Best try it out.
You know one picture says more than thousand words :)

You could turn your editable object into a wireframe by using a bevel, like the image below
http://www.geearea.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/wireframe.jpg
1. Select all polygons of your object
2. Activate the Bevel tool
3. In the bevel option set, Extrusion to 0m, and Inner Offset to 1m (you might have to experiment with this value depending on the dimensions of your object)
4. Make sure you untick Preserve Groups
5. Click Apply
6a. Your object will bevel in and the new polygons will be selected, simple press delete
6b. or... create a selection tag for the selected polygons and assign it a transparent material, you never know when you would need the polygons
To give the wireframe'd object a more 3d look, simple use the extrude command on the entire object to give it some depth.
Be warned though, this method creates a lot of polygons (over 1000 on the simple sphere in the image above)

put it in an atom array..and set sizes the same.
personally i would go with what mdme_sadie advised though.
