I thought they banned movies with motion capture (aka, performance capture) to be nominated for animated feature, so a Christmas Carol would not count. Maybe they changed it back

this is going to be a tough one because most of those on the list are really good.

Gaah! So many, I am a couple steps behind, 19 to be correct. Only seen Monsters vs Aliens, which was awesome btw=)
That's nice but on march 7 guys from Pixar will just comply with formalities.

My ideal five would be (with no specific order):
1-) “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
2-) “Coraline”
3-) “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”
4-) “Ponyo”
5-) "Up"
Hard to choose a favorite between them, they´re so different! "Coraline" is very cool, but me and my wife had a wonderful time with "Cloudy"(the gags, the art direction, the music, everything works like a charm). "Ponyo", on the other hand , is obviously magnificent but it´s also maybe too weird (in a magical kind of way).
Didn´t like "Up" very much (I was expecting more flying adventures and less talking dogs, I guess). But everyone else loved it, it seems, so I guess it´ll win.

Up is going to win. End of the story.
Strange how some straight to DVD films are mentioned in that list. I didn't think they would be considered given the distributors didn't see them fit for the big screen.

Those would be my choices from what I've seen. I think Coraline really stands out and deserves a distinction.

The only thing it requires is a 1-week qualifying run in L.A. Some of these (Tinker Bell) were submitted by the studios just to try to push the number over 16 so that their other movies have a greater chance of getting nominated.

I don't know why they even bother with this. When a Pixar film is in the running, then it's obviously going to win, no matter how good any of the competitors are.

lol pretty much - which annoyed the hell out of me last year, 'cause other movies were just way more fun than Wall-e. Having said that I actually enjoyed Up quite a lot.

Not always. Shrek, Happy Feet and Wallace & Gromit shows the contrary.

Marketing and publicity. They can run t.v. ads that say "Oscar nominated film", and their films will be talked about in any Oscar related discussion. This is a big help for DVD sales.

I don't know about that this time around... some interesting competition this year for sure.
we've got a Miyazaki film, and the bizarre Fantastic Mr. Fox from Wes Anderson. plus Coraline, and Disney's return to 2D... not sure how they are cause I haven't seen any of them yet, but it's definitely going to be an interesting race.

At least they deserve it this time ;)
Though I think Kung Fu Panda should just come back and win... :scream: (KFP was leaps and bounds better than Wall.E)
...
In my opinion... LOL

Still havent seen even half them though I usually try to keep up, seems to be so many maybe they should expand to make some different categories like Comedy, Drama, Pixar...

Personally I don't think there should be an animation category at all, and that they should simply divide the animated flicks into their respective slots. Comedy, drama, horror, etc.
Since there are more and more animated films every year, eventually the animation category is going to become overstuffed.

I think it is really good, that so many very good animated features came out lately. I find it hard to choose which one is best. The top three for me would be Meatballs, Up and Kung-fu panda.

Personally I enjoyed "Wall-e" as it was a different direction that was worth exploring. "Up" was a little lacking however but that is just with regards to the script and not technical excellence.
Pixar comes out with a new movie every year but that doesn't mean they deserve to win every year :)

'Up' was the only one this year that connected emotionally with me. The rest are entertaining, but that's about it. Although I haven't seen 'Ponyo' yet.
And why is Alvin and the Chipmunks there?? Isn't that mostly live action with some CG? Shouldn't Tranformers count as an animated film then too?

Don't forget total pile of $#!* the movie 9 is a shoe-in to win that category.
Edit: The animation was .. ok the story and audio for the actors left SOoo much to be desired. I feel bad for anyone who worked on that film.

Why feel bad for someone who got to work on a feature film? The story may be bad, but an employer could care less about that when they're looking at your reel.

I love Pixar movies and I loved Up but for me Coraline left an everlasting impression. I agree that they should start adding categories to this type of nominations. Coraline and Alvin and the Chipmunks in the same lot seems far fetched.
Coraline for the win, Up close second. I know I may be a little naive but I loved Coraline.
Cheers everyone!

Hoping for Coraline. That was a very special project.
Up had an amazing first act, and a weak final one. Ponyo was fun, but really out there... I mean, the adventures of the world's most neglectful mother and her paleoicthyologist 5-year-old?
(and don't hate on 9 -- those guys did a heroic amount of work under some difficult circumstances... there was a lot to like about it, and it was different)

Ponyo is a masterpiece, no doubt.
is this category simply count the animation technique or the story(movie quality) is involved too?

I am stuck between Up and Coraline :(
I love Pixar, I love Neil Gaiman .. dam it!
Not seen Ponyo yet but definitly will after the praise it has had from this thread.

Bonedaddy summed up my thoughts exactly. Up was good, but not as good as previous Pixar films. Ponyo was very entertaining to watch, but seemed a little too "out there" and I think went over the top a bit too much even for a Miyazaki film.
Coraline gets my vote, which is funny, because for some reason, I was hugely skeptical about it all the way until it was released, but it finally won me over with a great story and interesting visuals.
Also, don't forget Mary and Max, a very special film that has been winning awards.

That argument has merit. That's what people said for most of the history of the Academy Awards, before this award was finally created in 2001:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Animated_Feature
The problem was, voting members have said they'd hate to waste a top award on an animated film, when it could go to a "real" movie. No animated film ever actually won for Best Picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture) , and only one has ever been nominated.
Since there are more and more animated films every year, eventually the animation category is going to become overstuffed.
The category has sometimes seemed under-stuffed to me: in some years, it seems like some movies got nominations just because three animated films needed to be nominated. This year is one of those good years where there are a lot of films deserving of a nomination, and I hope we continue to be this lucky.

I really think Coraline deserves this one, but I still haven't seen UP or Ponyo though.
But Ice age and Aliens vs Monsters...? Sure they were fun, but surly not Oscar material imo

I'm a little curious why everyone is counting out The Princess and the Frog? Is it because no one has seen it yet? Is it because it is a princess movie? I may be a little biased but I have seen it and I think it is a fantastic movie and definitely worth consideration. If 5 movies are eligible for nomination then I think The Princess and Frog should be one, along with Up, Coraline, and Cloudy. I haven't seen enough of the other movies to pick a fifth.
