I've been doodling on and off with this little critter for a couple of days now. The placement and modeling of the front legs is just temporary and I have modeled some wings all ready to attach. The thing is, I'm not sure what to do with it. One half of me wants to go photo-realistic, and the other half says: "Go nuts! Slap on a pair of goggles, a leather helmet and a scarf, put some boots on those feet and make him the Flying Ace of Bugs!" Oh, the agony of choice :)

Nice modeling Cartesius. I'd so go photoreal with this one, since the model pretty much fits with that style. But either way could be nice, so of course the choice is yours.

I agree with Adam and would make it photoreal.
It is very real by now. I like it.

hi Anders,
very nice modeled so far and - IMHO - make it as a real realone.
Youīve got the knowledge and skills to do so. There are so many funny bugs but so few really good naturalistic ones. Even scientists, biologists will appreciate it :) . But it means - studying pictures, pictures, more pictures - there are not too many of them usable. Itīs just my opinion, couldnīt hide that visualisation of so far unvisualised microfauna is my main issue.:p
One of my attempts so far:
Daphnia (http://www.gtvision.de/Mikro-Fauna/images/WFlohVol87c.jpg)

Nice work Cartesius--and a very nice Daphnia from Gunter!

You can have the bug eating my dustmite for an afternoon snack!

Yep, go photoreal with this, this model says photoreal. If you wanted to go nuts with it, I think the model itself would have to be a lot different.

OK, photoreal it is then! Thanks for putting me in the right direction. I will check out the university library later today for some good reference material of insects and bugs.

And Gunter, that's a beautiful Daphnia you've got there, a real shimmering little beauty!

JoelD: that dustmite of yours really made me scratch when I saw it (wich is good) :)

Below is a quick render of the bug with wings (I'll deal with proper placement later) and a partial test with hairs using Hair Department.

nice bug ! its true u can go with a realistic style with it. u've done great with the legs, and the "jaws" give the bug an agressive look, i like it.
i'm curious, how did u make the "innner" of the wings ? dunno how its called in english, well, the "veins" inside the wings.

The wing is made of two SweepNURBS (the veins and outer frame/contour) and one LoftNURBS (the membrane/area making up the "fill" of the wing). Below is the xplanation I posted in a thread at Renderosity:

--
What I did was to first scan a line art image of an insect wing I found in a book. I scanned at 300% to get a really big image which I took into Photoshop for cleaning (erasing reference numbers, blotches and so on, plus adjusting levels and boosting contrast). I saved it as a *.psd and took it into Illustrator where I traced the lines with the pen tool. When I was satisfied I saved it as *.eps and brought it into Cinema.

The file opened in Cinema as a bunch of splines. I groupead all splines but the outmost one (the one giving the wing its contour) and connected them to get one spline, which I set to Cubic interpolation. I then did a SweepNURBS on it with a very, very small Circle spline to get the inner "patchwork" or veins of the wing structure.

I then dropped the outmost spline (set to Cubic interpolation as well) in another SweepNURBS and by using a slightly larger sphere I got the contour of the wing. I also set the SweepNURBS to scale down to 20% so the "frame" wouldn't be too even in its thickness.

Finally I used a copy of the outmost spline to make the actual membrane by dropping it in a LoftNURBS and that's about all there is to it :)

So basically it's all splines.

this is very impressive..those legs are fantastic modelling.

personally i think you should do photoreal cos youre very good at it...but i would put a spin on it...add the goggles, scarf, boots...but make it photoreal..
but i can here everybody screaming at there monitors shouting what the hell is that numbnut saying...go with real world...not hyperreal...but then thats whats good about forums like this..its up for debate.

whatever you decide...please keep us up to date on your progress.
