View Full Version : A book
Hi,
After seeing the movie Final Fantasy: the spirits within, I'm heavily inspired and motivated to learn MAYA(version4).
Since I learn most things on my own, I find it very easy to learn from books.
I'm pretty :p and pretty familiar with the interface after going through the first tutorial cd from 3Dbuzz.
So I'm looking for a book that covers modelling and animation(with all those fancy hype effects off cource). Anyone knows a good book?
thanks,
moin

Is there even a Mastering Maya 4? I don't think they made one for this revision.... Try Maya 4 Fundamentals from New Riders or Learning Maya 4 from A|W....

is Learning maya 4 book any good, cuz, I really need a book that covers nurbs and texturing, lighting etc... is this the book for me?
Do you know how many pages the Learning maya 4 book has, cuz i can't find it on their site
I heard from a friend that most of these books assume that you have already done some study in maya version 2 and 3, and that a book like mastering maya 4 is a sequal on them. What do you guys think?

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider one of the video tutorials from Gnomon Workshop or even from AW themselves. I've seen some of the Gnomon ones and they are good. They don't hold your hand and show you 1 way to create say a "car" or something, rather they show and explain how the tools work and let you decide what to do with them.
Personally, being able to watch a demo of commands etc take away hours of bumbling through the menus on my own.
I know you said "book" in your subject, so it's a little off topic, but I'd firgured I'd throw my 2c in there:)

like I said before, I don't think there is a Mastering Maya 4...
I have found Maya 4 Fundamentals to be a great reference. I'm an intermediate user though, so I might find this book more clear than a newbie would.

I have Maya 4 Fundamentals and I find it to be a good book as well.
Don't waste your $ with Exploring Maya 4.0, I can't believe I paid $ for that. The tutorials in it are pretty much useless and really "too" simple to pay $ for. What I mean is online tutorials blow that book away and those are free.
try mastering maya 3..........there is not much difference between 3 and 4, and this book covers really all what you need

i would recommend maya 4 fundamentals too , the cd that comes with it has some pretty nice video tutorials over 3 hours long.
