View Full Version : Buckets on Dual Xeon Nehalem and single i7?
Massemannen 11-09-2009, 07:30 AM Hi folks!
I have a problem (I think). My workstation has 2 E5506 2,13GHz and my slave is a Nehalem i7.
When I (net)render in 3dsmax 2010 and I compare the framebuffers, both computers have 8 buckets. Isnīt my dual cpu workstation supposed to have 16?
Is my Win 7 Ultimate configured wrong?
Any help is much appreciated
Take care all!

Nope, the 2x E5506 chips have 2x4 cores resulting in 8 buckets.
The i7 has 4 Hyperthreaded cores which = 8 buckets (4 physical cores/ 8 logical cores)

That is correct, the E5506 cpu doesn't have hyper threading,
its only in the higher range of xeon cpu's...

Dooooh (Homer style)
Allright, thanks guys for your accurate and fast answers!
Stupid question perhaps but does that mean that my single i7 is as fast as my dual Xeon setup?

I bet it is faster, benchmark them with Cinebench R10 - no need to install, just download and run it http://www.maxon.net/index.php?id=162&L=0, with your system you can get results in less than 5 minutes. Post the results here.
Note hyperthreading would not have helped you since it is in practice a trick for a CPU core to do 2 simultaneous threads at speed expense. It benefits only if you are doing many different things at same time.

Yes, they will be roughly the same speed. Also hyperthreading will help a lot. It will make your renders about 20% faster.
