Hi, this is my first proper 3D piece that i've actually modelled, textured and lit. I'm pretty new to 3D, have only messed around before.

I've been learning Maya with the PLE (hence the watermarked images) for a month or so now, I started off modelling a lamp and a pen then went on to the gameboy. This image has taught me alot about how maya works, stuff was reworked frequently as I got to grips with the program. The finished model took atleast a month on and off!! :surprised

The model is pretty much complete, just missing a few details (notice there's no cart in the machine!)

What I do need help on is the lighting and to a lesser extent the shading/texturing.

The lighting is very slap dash in the render, I have 1 key light acting as a window and 3 fill lights. 1 above to fill in the awkward recesses on top, 1 from the front and 1 from the side.

The main problem with this is the window light (an area light) doesn't light the recesses atall but manages to hit the top of the A/B buttons which protrude more than the others. I tried to solve this with a fill light above but it still looks dark in the dips.

The floor is also very dark on the left side and has a really bright ugly specular on the right. I will replace this with a reflected window by putting an incandescant window shaped plane in the scene.

I also need to make the reflection on the surface of the gameboy blurred, I presume I need to apply a fine bumpmap to simulate the fine grain of the plastic (how would i make a bump for this?)

I'd also like help making a realistic looking table.

Other than that I'm very pleased with it :) any comments very welcome.

I will post a wireframe soon if anyone wants to see it.

Hey,

Not bad for someone who just started. I definately like your subject. The annoying watermark makes it hard to see tho. :annoyed: I wish they would find a better way to do that than to plaster the watermark everywhere.

Crits:

Your screen looks like it had that background glow going at the bottom. But I think it would be cool to see it on the rest of the screen as well. And the bottom part where the screen meets the base is a bit too reflective. Aside from those minor things, great job.

Give yourself a pat on the back. You should be proud.

peace,

Lu

thanks alot!

The glow on the screen does come from the bottom its front-lit along the bottom edge, its only really visible when you look down on it but I sorta made it a bit more apparent in the render as I thought it looked cool.

It took me such a long time as I wanted to get every last detail correct, the bevelled edges were a pita, the round tool in maya seems to work when it wants to.

Agree about the hinge bit, I need to blur the reflections as the plastic has a very fine grain, any ideas?

Can anyone help with the lighting im still having trouble with it. What type of lights should I be using, at the moment it's made up of area lights?

Many thanks
