Does anyone know how I could distribute particles with the Hair and Fur modifier? I'm interested in rendering hair with Krakatoa. The only way I've been able to do it is by converting to mesh or splines, but that makes max crash with high hair counts.

Is that in 32 bit Max or 64 bit?
We have seen no crashes when converting to spline so far, but our counts might have been lower. Have you tried the example script (http://software.primefocusworld.com/software/support/krakatoa/krakatoaparticleostream_maxscript_value.php#HairAndFur2PRT) that we shipped with 1.5.0 that converts the hair to splines internally and dumps out PRT files per frame? Does that one crash too?

Oh, I hadn't seen that script. That looks like what I need.

And I'm on 64 bit. I should have clarified that it actually doesn't crash when converting to splines, but it makes max go very slow (with a couple million hairs). I wasn't going to use splines though because I couldn't figure out how to change things like thickness and color. So there's currently no way to combine the hair and fur settings with the color coordinates?

Thanks.

It is an example script and could be expanded somewhat, although I don't think there is good MXS access to most of the color and shading information of Max Hair/Fur.

Future versions of Krakatoa *might* provide some advances in the hair rendering department, but right now it is more of a curiosity or a cool hack. I would not use the script in production as is, although the shadows Krakatoa produces tend to look better than the native buffer method of Hair.

That's alright. I'm mainly looking to create static renders or at most a fly-through. I just want to know how much I can do with it so I know what's possible. I know close to nothing about scripting, so I'll just work with what I have available to me. Thanks for your help.
