View Full Version : Vehicle WIP: Assault chopper/jet concept
Phoric 08-17-2003, 07:13 AM Hello! This is my first attempt at 3d modeling. It is a futuristic/science fiction hover jet / assault 'chopper'. The concept is originally by Warren Fu, a former concept artist at ILM who has worked on Star Wars Episodes 1 - 3. He has given me permission to model a variation of it in 3d.
This is all a learning process for me so I would love to hear any comments or suggestions. I'm working in 3DS Max 5.1. This is what I have so far with about one day of work. Obviously theres a lot more to be done and there are no materials, texturing or lighting as of yet, just a couple stand-in colors to define some areas.

view of undercarriage - yeah the standard lighting sucks

Overall quick render. The gray area on the body is just to show about where the glass canopy will be...

Thanks! :buttrock:

Do you have a concept sketch available, i would love to see the concept.
I see you have given the bottom detail, but the top needs a lot more detail, looks a bit flat. For a first try this is really good.
Are you going to model the inside of the cockpit? How many people sit in there, because if i look at the window, it almost al the way to the front. If the person inside is as large as the cockpit, this means there isn't much room for his legs, or his total body is under the cockpit window.

wait a minute, let me get this straight, this is your FIRST attempt at 3D modeling and in just ONE day of work, you managed to get a model like this?!?!?! Are you insane? I wish my first model was this good. Mine was a crooked box and that took me a week to make.
Great job, how about showing the concepts you are working from?

Since its ILM's concept I shant mook the design (cause there is no way in hell that would fly!)
on the modeling, doesnt the area on the inside of the engine look like it has way to many polys. unless you are going to do a close up you should be able to reduce it and have no loss of detail. it looks like you used 24 rotational divisions (standerd probably) you could probably use 12 and still have it look great.
the probe on the front side of the thing, it looks, and is, just a bent tube. this looks odd as the rest of the craft has lots of detail on it, and it looks a little oversized. try making it thinner and longer with spiky bits coming off it. (concept is just that, a concept)
also on mechanics, how is the drive from the engines going to get to the props? and the engine on top looks like it is attached by a simple box, make it more exciting with separate pipes and cables going to the wing.
nice start, looks like it has a lot of future! (wow, my english is great)

Thanks for all your comments so far. :) Keep them coming. Yes this is my first model, well besides the tutorials I have followed from a few books and from the Max docs. Other than that I have just been lurking on CGTalk for a couple months and learning what I can. I spent all day Saturday working on it. But your comments are very encouraging because I thought it sucked, heh. Well I have a lot to live up to with the excellent stuff posted on this forum.
DogmaD: Thanks for your suggestions. I'm a little scared to post the original sketch at this point because his sketch is so much better than my model. Plus there are some major differences which I know I'll be compared to since I am doing it a little different than his original design, but only due to my own inexperience. But I will post it soon once I get more done. There is a lot more detailing to come, this is kinda just the basic layout. As for the cockpit detail, if things go well I will likely model the inside of the cockpit at some point. The current location is just to give an idea of where it will be. I figure this is a 1-person vehicle.
Karabo: Thanks dude, your post was encouraging. :)
Rei: Yeah I was waiting for that, the design is pretty unrealistic but I thought it looked cool and a good practice for my first one. I will definately make use of your suggestions.
Anville: Yeah, first model, one day. Wow maybe I will actually keep doing this. :buttrock:
Thanks all for the constructive crits. Check back for more updates soon.

Small update with new engine details; wing flaps; blaster flash-hiders, improved detail inside of jet engine as per Rei's suggestion (also improved the 'probe thing' not shown in this render)...

Still working on the wings area right now. More coming soon.
