I'm trying to create an animation showing the growth of a barnacle's base plate. In the animation, It needs to show the outside wall growing incremental rings in the y axis(up) and at the same time, the base plate widens or scales evenly in the x and z axis. Its rather hard to explain. I hope that description generates an idea. Ive toyed with blend shapes, but they don't really portray the idea of growth as they rather just give the notion of the rings just "appearing."

Which software?

Anyway, I think most softwares have a tool similar to morph target on Max.

If you are using Max, so you can animate the original shapes, that you must keep from modelling process, if you model by Loft; this way will give better control over the animation.
