Hi all,
I am proud to announce the release of mbFeatherTools 2.0 (http://feathertools.michael-buettner.com/)

mbFeatherTools is a production proven plugin for Autodesk Softimage which features styling, animation and simulation of bird feathers.
Feel free to download the 2.0 demo (http://feathertools.michael-buettner.com/) which includes 3 scenes.

Features :
New Features in 2.0:

Plane-to-Plane Intercollision (also referred to as Self-Collision)
Realistic wind resistance
Uniform Distance Constraint
Intercollision options inside setup node to reduce initial intersections
Stiff Spring option for faster previews and animation

Quick setup with a single button
Unlimited amount of styling controls
Styling is saved per vertex (CAV map)
Works on any polygon mesh
Automated creation and attachment of control objects to the animated mesh
3 different distribution methods:Random, Per Poly, Shrinkwrap
Shrinkwrap placement allows exact positioning of each single feather
Realtime playback of the simulation with direct response to user's actions
Customizable and extendible with the ICE tree
Color can be controlled with a Texture Map
"Goal" controls allow easy animation of folding wing feathers
Symmetric styling and animation (new in 1.10)
Global feather alignment (new in 1.10)
Soft collisions (new in 1.10)

Cool, but I noticed someone commented on your video about the price. I agree it does seem a tad on the steep side...

Yes I know, that's why I said the price seemed a tad high. Not crazy-high, just a little more than I expected it might be.

I believe that comment was related to the old price of €384. Due to the big request on the plugin, the price has been lowered.

Phenomenal plugin! excellent work Michael.

I think the price is very fair for something of this magnitude.

cheers.

Is it possible to get a smoother groom? And not have intersection problems when animating?

The dynamics look very nice.

That would be a nice useful time saver on Maya.

looks great michael, the price adjustment makes it a lot more appealing!

so often plugins are released for max and maya and we have to look envious over at them. great to see more developers choosing the softimage/ice platform.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

@Steven: I've never been envious on max or maya users :)

I'm not sure what you mean... there are many ways to prevent feather intersections.

The first demo is now available for download. (http://feathertools.michael-buettner.com)

As a Blender user myself.... I would be very interested in buying a plugin like that... I think you'd have a market for it, if you make a version for Blender... just my two cents.

Sorry for being confusing. Is it possible to get the feathers to form a much smoother surface with the feathers much closer together? The demo videos don't seem to be a very realistic groom.

Yeah that's just a matter of tweaking a few parameters. More videos coming soon...

This looks very impressive, the videos look great. If you were to adapt it to 3Dmax (or maya) I think you'd have a very large market as I am a Max user and am looking for a feather system and what you have would be absolutely ideal. Well done on creating (what looks like) a great plug in.

You can export the simulation as an obj sequence or PC2 cache files. I will make a tutorial video for this soon.

If you are using another 3d package than Softimage or would like to render a simulation in another package, here is a
Tutorial: how to export an ICE simulation
http://www.vimeo.com/7597000

Here is a summary of the export steps:

To export to 3dsmax:

Export the base mesh as .obj: File > Export > Obj File
Export the animation as .pc2: Animate > Plot > Write Geometry Cache
In 3dsmax, Import the .obj
Get a "Point Cache" modifier, then load the pc2 files

To export to Blender:

Export the base mesh as .obj: File > Export > Obj File
Export the animation as .mdd: File > Export > Point Oven > Point Oven Baker
In Blender, import the .obj: File > Import > Wavefront (obj.)
Import the MDD: File > Import > Load MDD to Mesh
