How do I keep the render window open?

If you mean the render output window, then AFAIK that can't be kept open permanently. For checking quick renders, use the render region instead. Or open the rendered file in clip viewer, the fx viewer or one of the command line tools

You can use preview instead. It looks just like the render window, but it can be left open.
