Hi, I'm an animator who is fairly inexperienced with rigging in maya. To get my feet wet, I'd like to try using an auto rigger script.

My ideal auto rigger script would include the following...

-clean easy to select controls
-quick responsiveness
-IK/FK switching & matching on both arms and legs
-Twist bones in the forearms for better deforms
-Ability to parent parts of the rig to other parts (World, Local, Root, etc.) aka Space Switching
-stretchy arms, legs, neck and spine (added ability to squash would be extra sweet)
-clavicles that rotate as well as translate
-spine that can rotate as well as translate

-Controls that allow me to shape the curvature of the limbs aka Minor/noodle/bendy controls

(extra bonus features)

-Pinable knees and elbows
-Soft IK to avoid popping when in IK mode

Anyway, I'd like to hear all of your suggestions! thanks for your time!

Auto-riggers are tempting, but dont expect to learn anything about rigging when using them.
They might get the job done, but unless you are the one who wrote the scripts, you are most likely very restricted in that they are hard to expand upon because you dont know what exactly they do. There are plenty of tutorials around to learn the basics, so id suggest going from there if you are serious about it. It might take some time before you will be able to build rigs with the functions you listed, but it is well worth it to learn it thoroughly.

I used an auto rigger that came with a book but it had a glitch in it (weird forearm twist).
I find I would rather rig myself-although it sure would be tempting to use one

especially if it also did the painting of weights. :)

do note his site links has been broken for a while the actual rig is at http://studentpages.scad.edu/~jdoubl20/files/AndyRig_v1.4.5.zip

he updated it to 1.4.5 but forgot to add the .5 into the link.

looks very promising.
