For some reason, even when "select only visible" is turned off, I am only able to select visible items. Have I altered a setting somewhere else? What's going on?

It's only in one file... Others work fine. Including an older version of the same file. What has happened?? Is it corrupted?

Hmmm try unhide all in poly and point mode first to make sure you dont have either still hidden.

If that does not work select all,all objects etc and copy them to a new file, now see if the problem is gone,if so its a setting, does not sound corrupted to me though, more like a setting itself.

Good trick Kiwi! That worked. (have to remember that) What setting could I have changed?? That was really strange. I thought for a minute that it had to with backface culling, but that wasn't it... Checked all through prefs and such. Very odd problem.

Sometimes when you are modelling its really easy to forget that you have points which are hidden etc, then when you save the file they are hidden next time you open as well.

Without being to see the file I would do a screen shot of the selection settings window from the fixed file, then open that image in the picture viewer window on the problem file and compare them. You might have to do a few screen shots though of different windows,or you can just write down settings :) Its a good idea to still work out what the problem was before you move on so that if it re occurs you can fix it easily :)

Yah, thanks. It was actually your second trick that worked. Copying the image into a new file. It turned out that it *was* the backface culling after all. I was in perspective view, select an object and go to points mode. Then switch to top view, and select a ring of points. Then switch back to persp. view and only points visible in top view had been selected. When I disabled backface culling in the top view, then the select command worked as it should... Nuances...

Thanks again fer yer help Kiwi

I'm about 99% sure the problem was that you had back face culling turned on. That will cause the selection tools to behave just as though you have "select only visible" activated.
