View Full Version : Poly count on a game character

I have a character with 5740 polygons that I'd like to use as a game character, but I don't know if it's too much. I'm thinking it's a bit high although I can't really reduce him without taking away critical detail.

Should I forget it?

It'd be used in a third person shooter, maybe 5-10 max on screen at once.

Can you specify which platform it is for? That might help.

I'm looking at some models extracted from Nintendo Wii games here, they appear to be between 2500 (for an NPC displayed plentifully around the screen) and 7000 triangles (for a lead character with a lot of facial animation).

I heard most other platforms these days are more powerful so by my uninformed guess you are safe :P

For PC :)

And thanks!

5k should be fine, the basic unreal 3 marine is like 6k if i remember correctly. If you can find out the polycount of a similar character in your target game engine then you'll know if it's acceptable.

Polygon counts arent such a big deal anymore, the texture maps are more ressource hungry these days.

I haven't started texturing yet, should I use 512x512 or 1024x1024 maps?

1024 for sure, maybe even throw in an extra 512 (or 1024) for the head.

Thanks guys, I got the character down to 8k tris and it still looks just as good. :)

You probably knew about this already but start with highest possible size (2048x2048 or higher) and you can always reduce the size at the end. Depends if the PC can handle the file size.

I always work at double res or higher and then scale down for the final texture. Never know when they're going to ask you for higher res textures for a PC port (if it's a console game), or if they're going to do a re-release for a new platform (similar to how god of war 1 & 2 are coming out on PS3 soon). Better safe than sorry I always say ;)
