It would be more helpful if I could find a front and side view of (and forgive me for my lack of political correctness) someone who has disctinctive black features - preferably from the plains of the Serengeti... but not necesarilly.

Do a google on Masaï, or Tutsi, or perhaps even Kikuyu (also spelled Gikuyu). Might give you some usefull hits.

well how about the HIMBA...found in northern namibia..nomadic...displaced by there own government and last of ancient peoples like the san bushmen.
they are notable for their red skin covered in ochre which helps protect them from the fierce sun..fantastic hairstyles.

that said...if you want warrior..there can really be no other than the zulus...very warlike and very sucessful...i've seen shaka zulu one of the most famous chiefs refered to as the black napoleon...he certainly was a most formidable foe.
i think you will find it very hard to find..that sort of reference maybe look in for portrait photos as reference.
