View Full Version : C4D to 3DS Export Bug?

I'm trying to export a C4D file into a 3DS model I can use inside of Swift 3D. When I export the model and bring it into Swift 3D, the model parts are all over the place and even some of the textures are misplaced.

Now I thought that somehow the model shifted through the conversion process between the two programs. However, I opened up the same 3DS file that C4D just exported inside of Cinema and I had the same exact result of the pieces shifting.

Now I know that the problem lies within the C4D 3DS exporter. It moves the pieces of the model for whatever reason. I'm wondering if this is a bug or maybe a Mac OSX bug? Hopefully the image will explain what I'm talking about.

Am I missing something here? There aren't too many options in the preferences for 3DS export. The only option is a scaling option. Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated.

I've never had a problem with .3ds export. Did you maybe scale the axes in your model?

No I didnt scale or move anything. I exported from C4D into 3DS. And re-opened it inside Cinema to find the mess.

I meant while you were modeling--did you use the object tool at any point? Or are you saying that you downloaded the model somewhere, opened it in Cinema, and then tried to export it as .3ds?

Well thanks for everyones input. Someone from Renderosity suggested the problem may be arising from the 3DS code itself.

After some research on my part, I was able to find out this usually happens if a 3DS code is created outside of 3D Max. It doesnt happen all the time, but may occur in complex models. The code itself is ancient and hopefully Discreet will update it sometime this century.

Or maybe better yet, Kaydara's FBX can become an industry standard for all 3D apps.

Yes indeed.. the 3ds format is unstable for large models..
Try to export your model in smaller parts.

And no.. Max has the same problem. Autocad to Max same problem etc.. ( inverted normals, missing parts etc. )

And be aware.. there is a limit for the numbers of points/faces in a single object. ( but I don't remember the number :) )
