View Full Version : Primary visibility not working with instanced particles an MR
antweiler 08-15-2003, 11:32 PM Hello,
I have a poly cube instanced to some particles. I need only the shadows, so I switched Primary Visibility off in the AE.
works in maya software but not in MR (which i need for the better quality with raytrace shadows)
it does work for non instanced geometry. A bug? Did I miss something, or is there a workaround?
thank you

Hmmm, it does appear to be a bug.
And everything else I tried to get them to be invisible yet still cast shadows either just didn't work, or did something crazy. I tried:
1. Switching on/off the renderstats checkboxes for the cube, the instancer, the particles etc
2. Applying a 'Use Background' shader to everything.
3. Changing the Mental Ray visibilty options for each object, like Trace, Visible etc
4. Applying a Mental Ray 'Transmat' (invisibilty) shader to the cube...
Applying the Transmat shader solved the problem, yet created a new one. The particles became invisible, they still cast shadows..... but this weird 'blobby-dotty-splatter-thing' renders floating near where the particles should be! It's like..... an ink splatter or something.
Anyway, I couldn't get the splatter thing to go away. You should report this as a bug to Alias. :hmm:
