Hi

I am trying to create foam on a beach. I have set up a PArray attached to a hidden object which generates the particles next to the shore. I followed a tutorial to create a particle age/falloff material for the foam, but it doesn't work with mental ray, and I can't use scanline for my scene. Is there an alternative to creating a material like this. This may be a stupid question, but I am still at a high school and I am studying animation independently.

There was a thread some time ago in the 3dsMax Main Section of this board about the limitation of the Particle Age Map to 65536 Particles per event (started by PEN, if that helps finding it ;)). There also was a link to an alternative Mapping. Have a look for it.

with box3 or krakatoa you could easily shade your particles that way.
Is there any way you can create geometry foam you just push through the ground s it appears and re-appears?

I think I'll have to come up with a better method of doing this. I don't have access to very powerful computers, so I need to keep the particles down to a minimum, and I have already used 2000 grass particles in the same scene. Unfortunately, I don't have access to Krakatoa or any other plugin. Thanks for the input, though.

is there any reason why you cant render out that layer in scanline render and then comp it in?

I think rendering the scanline material and editing it into the mental ray animation would be rather difficult. I don't have access to After Effects (if you're able to do that with this program) and I don't know how do something like that with Premiere Pro (if you can). Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this subject, but thanks for the input.

Look into JahShaka (http://jahshaka.org/) it's an open source node based compositor and its free. Haven't tried it in quite some time, as I remember it worked fairly well, I imagine you could easily use it to comp a few passes :)

Thanks for the link. I'll certainly try it.
