Maybe this should be in effects...but how would I go about making a light sabre glow based off of a material...or is this really an effects question? I am kind of clueless how to make a lightsabre out of, say, a cylinder.

i have 3ds max5, rhino3d and maya ple 4.

All you need to do is add luminosity to the part of the light sabre that you need to have glowing. You can do this in your Max Material Editor by assigning a value to the Luminosity channel. This will make the "blade" part appear to be lit. You can then use Video Post in Max to add an actual glowing halo around the surface. I can't quite remember how to do this (it's been quite a few years since I used Max), but you have to do something like assign a Material ID to the luminous surface, and then use that ID to trigger the glow effect in Video Post.

I guess you'll have to read through your Max manual to find out the exact steps, but this would be a quick and easy way to do it :)

where is the luminosity channel? I am still a bit new to materials. :-\ thanks!

Luminosity is only available with a Raytrace material. I'm not sure if Luminosity actually gives off light or not. I don't think it does, but I could be wrong.

If you do want it to give off light, try Neon:

Neon works with Radiosity. So, you will have to have a radiosity solution before rendering. Look around at Rendering > Advanced Lighting.

If you want it to give off a bit of a soft glow, use Rendering > Video Post > Glow.

Yeah simple luminosity generally will not actually illuminate surrounding objects. However, some renderers (eg LW's renderer) allow objects with luminosity to have illumination properties when rendering with radiosity :)

Yeah, you LW users with superior this and superior that. Blah!

To tell you the truth, I'm a little confused right now. A long, long time ago, I was doing a computer terminal/contral panel. It was a Raytrace material and a map for either Luminosity or Flouresence - I can't remember which. Now, this control panel thing that I was doing was giving off light; it was lighting up the far wall using the colours in the map that I had done. Nothing fancy. That is, no special renderer or rendering options. It was just plain ol' Max's scanline.

To this day, I haven't been able to reproduce this lighting anomoly.

That is really strange, Stroker. Perhaps then Max can use luminosity/flourescence to illuminate... It makes sense to do so anyway :)

hrm, stroker how about an output map in the self-illumination channel...
