this is for the MotorTrend International Design Contest, I'm finaly happy with most of the design, so it's just lots and lots of details, tweaking and interior to do now, as well as redo the back (I'll post that when I get it more like I want it).

I am using 3d Max 5.1.

I am pretty confident with my modeling, but this is my first try at a "concept" vehicle, so thats what I'm looking for critiques on. The wheels are temporary, but they will be large 5 spokes similier to these.

I'll be working on this for about another month (getting as much detail as possible), so I'll be posting updates.

looks good, but I dont think anyone will produce a car with a top like that. I would just stick to a normal roof with a sunroof...

Also, it looks very plain at the moment, try adding some stuff on it.. more bodystile. like a lip below the door area, maybe some holes on the side, ya know, just to make it more interesting.

Also did you meshsmooth the mesh in the non wired shots? THe smoothing on the edge going into the grill area looks too nice if it werent meshsmoothed, hehe

Yes, the non wire views have 2 NURMS iterations on them, is that ok for the Focused Critiques?

There will be some beams holding the t-tops in, I just havn't got there yet :-)

I'll have to do something on the bottom of the car, it does look a bit simple.

those lights dont look right on the back of that... the shape, and size of the lights mixed with the darker grey boxy area they are in just doesnt match. id say push them out a b it more, make them wider, and square off the sides of them. Also.. the logo below the light area is wierd.

Error404. Nice work so far. I have never designed a vehicle (not really anyway) and I don't know much about enignes, but I understand esthetics. Currently to me this looks very much like a late 60's camaro. You've sleaked the design out but to me it looks like you haven't taken into account much of the jumps in that have occured in design. I think you need to be a lot more creative man! If you like camaros, stretch it out a bit more (meaning try harder). The NEWLY designed, current prototype corvette has a very retro feel, but it is very modern. Retro is really cool, but I think you need to take into account new materials and new technologies that will be used in the design. This car wouldn't be limited to the limitations that would have hindered say car manufacturers in the eighties and prior. I think retro is great but you should push it more. Chrysler has been very good at pushing auto design recently. Take a cue from them. I'll be watching this. Cheers!

EDIT: I just checked out your website. Good work, but I can see where you might be hindered in looking ahead. You LOVE classic cars! :thumbsup: But I think for this you need to be more visionary dude!

I'm working on the rear end right now, I'll post that update as I get further with it.

Yea, I have a real soft spot for classics, and I do think that does hinder me a bit... it hurts to stretch the mind :scream: :D

I'll see what I can come up with :-)

sorry for double post.

just some ideas that may help it... that whole back area is just too large.. push in the sides n the top of it a bit.. would also give the trunk area more angle...

and the backlights, bah just messed with those, sorta looks like a dodge charger :P

Hey, thanks very much for helping me out here! :-)

I didn't see your photoshop version before I uploaded this, and I think you got a better idea, smaller white lights... I think I got the exhaust tips the right size now.

I'll push the rear sides and top down a bit, and see how it turns out.

nice job on fixing the lights up, but, they seem to big now lol, i see you stretched them lower, but... too much lol.

Also remember to leave room for a liscence plate in the middle, if you will have it there.

Error404 I don't think you are looking deep enough. I know you got it in you. You're making a concept car, so do it. What should this ****ing thing look like. BEEFy! yes! MODERN! Yes! You don't account for more trunk space in a smaller modern engine, where's the signal lights on the sides to let people standing there know, that you are turning. Or side mirror indicators like a mercedes coupe. Why the lego blocks for lights at the back? Its been done. What have you not liked with the camaro design in the past? What would you do to improve it?

I think I'm on the right track. I'll probably model some plastic "inserts" around the new ram air holes on the nose, like the plastic around the foglights.

I will probalby do the strip around the nose of the car, but the rest of the car (accept maybe stripes for an SS version) will be single tone :)

But, if I do a 2 tone color scheme (I doubt I will,) I would probably have the color change flow with the side profile body line.

I'll work on the fender flares more tomorrow afternoon, have had a few comments that the edge is a bit to sharp where the flare turns into the fender.

a quick set of wheels. everybody is telling me to change the wheels, so here is a quick set (gonna try to stick with 5 spoke design)

i actualy like this so far alot and i am a very small fan of american cars, but can def see the inspiration from the original camaros, u could possibly persuade me w/ ur design too. imo i would not add a spoiler or any stupid lip type thing in t he back, its simple i really like it, but id def play around w/ some light shapes besides jsut rectnagles. i think the key to designing a nice car is actualy keeping it simple and focused, so as the driver is not forced into parading around w/ a certain wierd style ex. any new chrysler, sorry anyone who likes anyhting comming out from them i think they all look like big space rockets from the 70s, look at their sales they are dropping heavily. def keep it slick, possibly nudge up the bottom of the nose so it dosnt lie perp. w/ the ground, looks like it has a body kit on the front. in my other opinion i like the way some cars look w/ larger back than front wheels, putting the car on a foward angle, even tho its sorta not like older camaros. really good start i think, keep going w/ the updates. :applause:
1 more thing, ont he rear view mirrors i think the actualy place where the mirror sits should be round, mathcing the perfect circle headlights, keeping consistant shapes makes the car easier to look at and less jumbled, therefore better looking

I like what I am seeing. You have a great progression. I agree with everyone else that the lights need to be tweaked. Also I thought what might kick it up a notch is to do a hard/soft top. One like the new Mercedes convertibles with the retractable hard tops, or no top at all like the Pontiac Solstice. Here is a Pic.Solstice I hope this helps. I love this look right now the way the trunk molds into the head rests. Would love to see the camaro like that. Keep up the good work.

Hey Dan! Very nice model!

I was looking at the images for a while and for some reason the car reminds me of a Mustang more than a Camaro, especially the tail lights, could be just me though.

sorry for the lack of update, I have been busy

Anyway, this is a layout test, the renders arn't final, and I still have a few parts to finish on the car (you'll probably notice some odd spots where I'm not finished). Will be printed out 18x24 @ 300 DPI, and mounted.

I still have 2 more renders to finish, the interior shots.

Great model, you should put a env reflection on it. get a photoreal render out of that great model. i really like your poly model. very clean. good work.

It's a really nice model, yet it still lacks a ton of things.

maybe a small wing in the back, different smoothing groups in certain areas. Just looks like a fiberglass body placed over a chassy, not a realistic street car.

Like I said before I have tons of ideas, I'll be on AIM for the next 2 days, hope we can talk :)

I can normal get a vehicle mostly finished in about 20 hours or so, but this one took a lot longer, because it's concept stuff, and I deleted, remade, deleted, and remade stuff again and again. I have been very busy with my classes (they come first, because I PAY for them...), my real camaro (I'm SMACK in the middle of restoring it, and other stuff.

so it looks like I didn't allow enough time for this project :hmm: I'm just finishing up some stuff real quick, and rendering it all out to be printed. Next year, I'm going to start much earlier :)

Thanks so much for all the help guys! I think I have expanded my mind a bit with this consept stuff. I'm still not super at it, but I'm deffinantly alot better than when I started :)

I'll post up the final renders when they finish
