View Full Version : when slicing polygons max adds random edges/points? img included.
Now, 3d Max has just began doing this to me, and now it's picked up on the habit and it's not letting it go for anything.
Just to show you all I made a box, selected four of the faces and used slice plane twice. When I slice the plane, it just adds these dotted lines and additional faces and edges and points. Somewhat randomly placed, sometimes they are attached to corners. ANY help at all would be appriciated. I'm at my internship and it's making me look like I break stuff all the time.

While I don't use the slice tool, I can offer a possible bandaid fix for your problem.
Add a "turn to poly" modifier to your stack and check the "remove Mid-Edge Vertices" button. Then, collapse the stack.
There have been some problems with this tool, as well as the cut tool in the past. Try going here:
www.scriptspot.com
and look for scripts that may have fixed this problem.
Best of luck, man, that's a total drag. Wish I could have been of better help.

:D
Do you think it would be better to just stop using edit mesh and begin to use edit poly from now on?

What is happening is that the Slice Plane is creating vertices where there are hidden edges. The way around it is to use the Slice Modifier instead of Edit Mesh's Slice tool. Or use Editable Poly, as it appears to behave as you would expect and only places vertices along visible edges.
