Just getting set to install net render for some renders over the weekend. Is it too much of a drag on the system to have the client and server be the same machine? Is it better to have a slower computer as server and leave the faster machines to just be clients?

It depends on the amount of clients you are using. I think the limit was 3. If you use more render clients, the server is too busy monitoring the clients. But I think that limit also depends on the hardware you're running.

Yah, I've just got 3... Hmmm. My computer is the best one for server, because it's easiest to access from outside... But it's also the fastest render... Guess I've got to balance it all out.

In that case you can run the server and client on the same machine without any worries.

Great thanks. Want to get it all tested this weekend...

I'm getting an error when I try to run net render client or server or my computer. "Invalid gui.cob". Anyone know what that means? I just installed net render. Did it need some updating from 8.1?

Hi Iggy,
yes you will need to update all clients and the server to the same version.
InvalidGui.cob is usualy a sign for a faulty installation. Are you sure you installed the Client correctly? It requires a different instalaltion path then the other modules.
Hope this helps

So I can run the 8.1 updater on computers that just have the client installed? What about my machine? I am already running 8.1 but only just installed net render. Do I need to reinstall C4D, or can I run the 8.1 updater on top of what I already have?

Just run the updater.

Thanks Srek. Already done! I like that new updater. MUCH quicker. About to test the net render, but it was really easy to set up!
