when you scene gets to having too much detail and your spin/pan/zoom functions just start lagging too much you can turn on degration override and it will allow you move around at a normal speed.

If there is any other function of it I have yet to find it.

Sort of, when you are using degration override the object turns back to it's normal self as soon as your spin/pan/zoom command is finished. Display as box will reamin that way until you turn the option off.

I guess there would be advantages to each. Lets say you have many objects in your scene, you only want to work on one but you do not want to hide them because of placing purposes. In this case you could change all of them display as box (except for the one you are working on) and speed up your display.

Now lets say you have one or more objects that you need to work on with a lot of detail but your display is lagging too much. So, you turn on degration override and you can continue to work on all of them and when you spin/pan/zoom they will temporarily change to boxes to speed up your display.

I hope I make since.
