View Full Version : How do artists get the warm glowing effect in there renders
Sully 10-30-2009, 12:41 PM Could anyone shed some light on how artists achieve this kind of effect in there renders. I love the way the lighting looks in this render and im pretty sure its a pass rendered seperatly and used in post to create this suttle glow. I know 3dsmax MR has a glow lens filter is it simply just a case of rendering this out and applying it in post?

Once I get the lighting and rendering down, I'll either do a glow pass, or just do it in post. Mostly in post, however. Duplication of the layer, blur, lower opacity, futz with the blend mode.
Just a nitpick, but it's "their", not "there". ;)

I generally don't like doing bloom or glow in my actual renders, unless it's an additional pass. Generally I find that it's faster to create and tune in post.
For stills, try this (in Photoshop):
- Select all and copy your image (shift-cmd/ctrl-c for all layers)
- Go into mask mode and paste the image as its own mask
- Go to levels and adjust the shadow way far to the right... you're looking to have only the highlight areas unclipped.
- Create a new layer, and fill the mask with white
- Deselect your mask, then Gaussian blur by a biggish amount
- Adjust opacity to taste and add a photo filter adjustment layer to warm or cool the bloom. Alt (option)- click the line between your adjustment layer and bloom layer to get the photo filter to only apply to your bloom.
Quick & dirty, but it works pretty darned well for most things once you get a feel for it.
