You can use 2 particles set to Blobby rendering. Or you can use this plugin (Maya 2008):

I did a project like this for a museum a while ago... and it still haunts me. We ended up using a simple maya animation of the split and doing the rest of the divisions in comp.
I've recently begun learning houdini... and see some potential in that in creating recursively dividing objects.

As another guy already suggested:

Play along with nParticles, nParticles Self attract and goalsPP set to the two different spheres. Don't have enough time for furthe explanations, now but feel free to PM me if there are more detailed questions.
