View Full Version : 3D Character: Year 12 Design & Tech
Hey
I am coming to the end of my final year of school, year 12 in Sydney. For Design and Technology one of my subjects i chose to create a 3D character for my major work and a few lil movement animations. Considering only 7/60 marks go towards my actual final product (the characte) i didn't want to make any huge animations or anything. (i saved that for Art) The folio for Design and Tech is supposed to be all about the progress and evaluations and stuff so now that i have finished the product I would like to include in my final evaluations some critical comments (and good ones....please o god good ones for the sake of marks hehe)
The character is supposed to be an IT Specialist like a networking nerd or something. Its not meant to be realistic however i did want it to look believable at least in terms of anatomy. (IE: not 5 legs and 50 fingers for typing) His name is Marvin. He comes equipt with an un ironed shirt (365 days and counting) and a Matrix coding tie. Of course his pants are too short and he has the classic comb over slicked gel hair.
Anywayz blast away. Don't be too harsh :( i havn't had any courses in 3D or anything. This was made in 3D Studio Max R3.

Yeah man, you have nothing to worry about...
that's a fine lookin nerdlinger you got there :applause:
A few comments:
I like the posture, it's realistic and shows he has not obliged to the OH & S safety regulations whilst sitting at his computer.
His teeth! Hahaha, thats gold!
His hands are perfect!
His shoes are very... well, Orthopaedic, haha :p
His hair couldnt have anymore grease put on it! HAHA
The matrix tie is also halarious! Ghhhhbbllayvin!
 Good work, What a fine speciemin he is!
hehe thanks dude
to criticise it myself i would say the food stains and coffee stains down his front look more like bullet holes and blood ... IM A FAILURE@!)(*&$$#
Ill change that for my folio renders though

Very nice character you have there... :)
The only critic I can give is that the torso kinda look a little bit squarey, not smooth enough, and the wrinkles on the shirt look a little bit too regular... the wrinkles in the back (that look kinda roundish) kinda adds to the "nerd" look, though... makes it look like he's trying to look like a tron character... :D

i like it(but the wringcels on the shirt look a little stiff)
Yeah the wrinkles are just a wave modifier in max. I put it on after i had staged the character because i needed to get something printed out for my folio to pad it out and show some progress etc etc. If i had more time i would have made the wrinkles on the actual mesh i think. (when the character animtates the wrinkles stay inthe same spot in the world and the character moves through them :( )
Anywayz thanks
PS: for anyone else, im hoping to use these comments as part of my final evaluations so please even if ur just glancing or watever and feel like venting anger on something and think my work is crap, let me have it. What ever it is it will look good in my folio cause itll look nice and evaluated and stuff.....so any comments at all ranging from 1 word critics to thesis. ANYTHING lol

Looks great! Very Geeky!
Just some suggestions, you might want to make the lense on his glasses more clear looking. It would help with being able to see his eyes resulting in more character yadda yadda yadda and would make him look more real.
Texture work could be improved with a more fabric look in the clothes, would go really well with making it realistic.
I personally think a more skinny neck would work really well! It'd bring out so much more geek :) Keep it up its excellent work!
cheers,
Julius

Ok mate you twisted my arm.
The character looks pretty good. Especialy for an hsc work. There are a few things you need to work on.
I think the shoes look to smooth, if i was doing those shoes i would add a texture map to the specular highlights to make it looked scuffed and used.
I have to agree with Headshot and Locoman that the shirt's folds look alittle too regular and roundish. Prehaps you could use a displacement map rather than the ripple modifyer.
The texture its self in his clothing looks alittle too flat. Needs to look more fabric like. His glasses need to have more of a glass texture. at the moment it looks plasticy.
OK i was being ultra critical there, i think the character is well designed and would be great for a computer game or 3d cartoon.
Love the teeth and his tie
Keep up the good work and goodluck with your hsc
