I`m experiencing some severe problems with 3dsMax
since I installed the latest Catalyst drivers for my
Radeon 8500 LE 128 gfx-card (WindowsXP).
When a model gets more complex Max simply quits
without any warning or the possibility to save.
Same happens when I try to open(!) a complex
model.
.
After some time I reinstalled the whole system because
I was completely fed up but it`s the same problem again.
I don`t really know if it is a driver-problem. Just a guess.
Anyone noticed something similar?
I can`t work anymore!!!
.
Please don`t tell me to buy a new graphic-card... :annoyed:

Or perhaps it has something to do with Directx?

I heard lot's of bad thinks with consumer ATI-crads and OpenGL

back in the days of RagePro 128 ( or what it was called )
i had an ATI card and Max showed exactly the same symptoms like you describe.
Maybe their ATI-Pro cards have a better OGL implementation,
but i can only say that Nvidias OpenGL is unbeatable.
Even when today ATI hardware is faster and more advanced i'll stick with Nvidia cause of the Opengl drivers...

Ok then. Things are getting really desperate here
so which card would you buy right now?

okay i had a problem when i upgraded the drivers for my 8500 LE i could not play games or do anything that was high in poly counts like modeling, it would crash or just freeze.

i found out that the newest driver versions for radeon are for Direct X 9 and that if you do not upgrade to DX9 then it will cause those problems. that was the case with me.

i to reformated my comp cause that was the only way to fix it. try running dxdiag in the run command and check your DX settings. i did not want to be bothered with it so i just reformatted to the orig settings and installed the catalyst drivers that were non DX 9 supportive and just kept DX 8.1 and i have not had a problem with max since but if you want to upgrade to your Vid drivers then i would suggest you upgrading DX 9 to and that should help you out.

I switched to a FX5600Ultra. A lot of people comfirmed
what spacefrog said about ATI-cards so I didn`t want
to bother anymore. Thanks anyway. (;
