View Full Version : Animation Show Reel (WIP)
Dowayne 10-29-2009, 03:14 AM Hello everyone I would really like to get your feedback on my Animation Reel.
This is definitely my first post in the Animation WIP. My Demo Reel is coming close to finish I just need as much critique as possible. there will be additional animations added such a short lip sync Animation about 6-7 secs, a short weight animation about 5 sec and additional walk cycles.
Again I would definitely appreciate your feedback
Thanks in advance

-I would put the 2D animation in a separate reel targeted to potential 2D seekers.
- the unicycle character is just briefly visible in the first shot and the camera action is too wild.
- the unicycle character isn't showing weight. For example, when he jumps he pulls the wheel into the air as if his upper body had some other support.
- When he moves he doesn't lean into his direction of motion.
-his wheel is sliding.
-too many irregular twitches in the girl walk cycle, body parts are jerking into position. If that is intended, I'd show that after a more normal walk cycle.
-On a treadmill-style walk cycle the feet need to move backward at a very consistent speed. If you really mean for them to move like that, animate her moving forward on the stage.
-The bar scene is the most promising in its poses. It's the only real acting clip.
But overall, I'd say body mechanics is the weak link. Conveying the weight and mass and the reality of your objects. That is something animators struggle with on every frame.
Well, those are my observations. :lightbulb Hope that helps!

Thank you for the Crit I do appreciate it, I am actually going to re-animated the little robot on the Unicycle, I am definitely working on establishing weight and appeal. It's one of the challenges I usually face however Improvements are currently happening as we speak,
As I look back at the Girl's walk cycle I can see the errors you speak of thanks for letting me know. my intentions where to have her walk with a bit of appeal in her character. I also noticed her inconsistencies in the walk.
I will definitely separate the 2D Reel from the 3D.
Again I would like to thank you for the Feedback.
-Cheers-

Off to a nice start Dowayne. robcat2075 has a lot of great comments. The only thing I wanted to mention too was that for smaller companies they may enjoy seeing both 2d and 3d on the same reel. Like for an internship at a small company or something. When I was in Cincinnati looking for interns a lot of small ones did both 2d and 3d and web. So just keep that in mind when looking at smaller companies. Keep posting updates.

thank you that's actually a great advice, at the current moment I am developing a flash Reel only dealing with flash Animation that I can do. for instance this was one of my second Flash animations, a small skit with my friend and I as the characters. I was the voice of the Bunny Rabbit.

Maybe Youtube has lost some frames but I don't see an anticipation there. I see him immediately taking off. :surprised

That jump is way too slow. There's no way he could hang in the air that long to pull the wheel up. Even in a cartoon universe.
And I still dont' see him leaning into the the direction he's going when he starts.

Hey man
you got some nice 2d anims in your reel but your 3d anims has a lot of problems
When reading my crtis you might find me as a basterds or whatever but trust me its to help you :
all your animations have weight and smooth problems
For exemple the walk cycle of the girl , there are a lot of pooping , character change of from one position to an other too quickly , like the arms , the pelvis dont seems to balance on the vertical line , the foot stop sliding at the end during a long time , you must also avoid to get the foot ik be straight at all cost
A walk cycle is pretty hard to do , but honestly you should rework it
00.32 0037 almost good , need to rework on the smootness , curve
1.29 1.34 your robot is sliding on the ground and there is a little pooping , add a breakdown between the two poses
Also for a good demo reel in animation there are mains anims required :
facial animation or lipsinc
Weight animation
Walk cycle or run cycle
Realistic human animation
If we know that you can animate a human correctly , we know that you can animate a creature
Your demo reel is also quiete too long , try to shorten around 1mn , show only the best of the best
In general your demo reel is too light , if your aim was to look for a job with this demo , i would highly suggest you to take time to reworks your animation or do new ones , so keep it up

Thanks For the Awesome advice I am currently reworking my Reel at the moment.
Currently I am trouble shooting some issues with my computer (The motherboard fan isn't working) So that's why its taking sometime.
this Demo Reel is definitely a WIP I don't intend to show companies until it's fully finished.
I wanted others to view my WIP only because I really want feedback on my Animations.
Again thanks again for your Critique it wasn't harsh it was just what I needed
robcat2075
I do apologies for that video, it was actually a test video to see if the file would upload.
:banghead: . :argh: because my computer decides to stop working properly, its nothing Major just the Motherboard fan isn't spinning.
By the next Post I will show the following:
Retiming of the UNicycle character's jump.
a character walkCycle (revised with a different character)
Thanks again all I will be much more careful in the future in regards to what I post.
My apologies again
