I am a Zbrush user and i just saw a demo of Mudbox 3d painting on multiple layers, in real time and i must say, i am impressed.
What's the pros and cons of each software?
Is it worth switching to Mudbox (the clear interface is so inviting...)?

try it yourself... if you are a hardcorde z user you wont be happy in mud...
maybe with the texturing...?

best would be to use both..!

Well,Mud is pretty resource heavy.Much more so than ZB. A good GPU with loadsa Ram is a prerequisite. I much prefer to work in Mud but sometimes the sluggishness pisses me off.
My system aint bad but if i were you i'd check out the demo and push it to the limits of the kind of work you'll be doing.

get the 30 day trail and test drive it for yourself
one thing about Mudbox, it can easy fit in the production life
it acts the same way Maya does (kinda)
the biggest advantge
it can output multiple UV tiles (Notmal - bump - disp - diff ) with a click of a button

Most people say that Zbrush is confusing but has more features.
Mudbox doesn't have the idiotic UI and skyhigh learning curve of most mainstream 3d software. Plus I haven't seen any 'becomes 2d when released' quirk. Zbrush users might not like it if they're too married to their ways.

I was able to pick up Mudbox immediately whereas Maya puts a hump in your way everytime you need to learn something major. I know apples and oranges but my point is Mudbox mostly eschews nonintuitive UI choices. I do miss the Cube from Maya which many people hate.

I personally loved playing in Zbrush for years. It was a big step up from Amorphium, the late-90's sculpting package from the people who worked on the original T1000, in Terminator 2. But Amorphium was very limited and very basic.

Zbrush one-upped Amorphium, but Mudbox fits a Maya workflow much, much better. Like others said, the preposterous UI in Zbrush alone is a big enough drawback to switch. And if you're used to Alt-key viewport tumbling, Mudbox is really nice and comfy. Painting up textures in Mud is a breeze, too. It's almost fun! I don't think I've opened Zbrush since Mud 2009 arrived, nor would I need it for any reason really...

I, too, found the absolutely ridiculous UI in Zbrush a major headache. To perform the simplest task requires 50 steps. Getting a texture out of Zbrush and into Maya requires nothing short of dark magic and ritual sacrifice. Mudbox's UI is easy to use, the tools function in a combo Maya/Photoshop way and it simply makes sense. Zbrush makes me want to punch people. A lot. And Pixologic's attitude towards the Mac community and it's lack of communication is a deal-breaker.

Autodesk, take my money. You had me at hello.
