Hello. I was wondering if anyone here had any success in low poly modeling using C4D, or know of someone who has. I plan on getting C4D and learning to design in high poly, but right now my main love is Game Design. Unfortunately, I don't see many examples of this kind of modeling in any Cinema gallery. I'm educated in MAX's workflow, modeling, and uvw tools since I currently use GMAX, but I've learn to enjoy Cinema's functionality. Just hope I can still acheive the same results if I purchase C4D. Does Maxon plan to enter the game market?

Ugh...feeling like a n00b again.

I think Cinema is perfectly capable of doing low-poly models for games, but unfortunately it doesn't have all the export formats for game engines.

Forgive my ignorance, but will the current develpment of Harware rendering in C4D provide the means of bringing Cinema and Game Dev closer together?

Vestan: Well it couldn't hurt, but thats not going to help any.

the hardware renderer will a lot for using C4D for games, because its not designed as a hardware Final output render (offline) this one is designed for Nvidia's CG code for realtime shaders and such.(very impressive ones I might add) So it will allow people to finally start doing a lot of that perpixel RT shading that max and XSI and such are getting into. Won't affect C4D as a modeler.

As a modeler, C4d is equally capable, some tools differ for sure, C4d doesn't have a hinge tool, but max doesn't have a bridge tool, overall they are very similar though in polygon modeling capabilities, honesly anything you can model in one you can do in the other.

I'm in the same boat - I used to do Morrowind mods and such, but I just couldn't afford my own copy of MAX. I ended up with C4D which has been great for pre-rendered...but I've been yearning for a game that I could use C4D models in. Actually I could use GMAX I suppose - but exporting to .3DS doesn't export UVW coordinates....and I refuse to UVW map something TWICE ;)

and I refuse to UVW map something TWICE

:lightbulb Hmmmm.......... a bridge plug BP2 -> GMAX.

It does export them, it just tends to mess them up a bit. I've had pretty good success transfering files between Lightwave and Max using .fbx format. Hopefully when C4D finally gets .fbx support this will work well.

It seems I'll be waiting for those export plugins.

What is .fbx format?

Kaydara's Filmbox format. They have free plugins for multiple packages to transfer files and animation. C4D is currently not supported, but it's supposed to be in the works.

Maybe you could export as .obj and use MilkShape to convert it to a game engine format. I think it only cost $25.

C4D is well capable of Low poly modelling as I have already done some low poly game models.

One thing to remember though, when you triangulate a model in Cinema for some odd reason its wont triangulate Symmetrically and how I usually do it is triangulate, then delete half the model and optimize points by 0.01 to remove unneeded points, then mirror the half of the model with grid snapping enabled.

Note that deleting and mirroring an un-triangulized mesh will still result in non symetrical triangulation.
