This is my first shot at a challenge and hope Im goin about it alright...

Story is a freakshow family tired of the lime light and the little/no respect who take there savings to move into a small home in the burbs. Enraged that such people would take up residence in their community the people of NORMA ban together to send the Freakles into exile. Little did they know the Freakles savings account bought them a hefty arsenal and they aint takin sh*t....

Thanks guys! I appreciate it. ( Thanks Prs-Phil btw) I prolly will model the last one and Im going to use stiltz for the 2d challenge. I may clean all of them up eventually and make a family circus poster but who knows...
anyways figured Id post a clean up of stiltz here to see what people thought I should model him or junior...but he'll most likely be 2d.

I think you should model the stilts guy, there is more room for diversity in the texturing of him, you got wood metal and leather, as well as the tattoos, I think it would be cool. Even though his abnormality is not all that abnormal, there are a lot of people with no legs, but you make it way more interesting in the way he moves around with the stilts in his hands… very cool.

Just my two cents

Thanks for the kind reply! I think youve put it into perspective. This is my first forray into low poly modelling ( actually I have no clue but figured this would be the best way for me to learn as I couldnt think up anything for myself) and think he would be a good start.

Ive started his stilts and will try and start on him this week. ( getting married on thurs so I dont know how much I'l be able to accomplish) Heres what I have so far:

Cool, cant wait to see him in full 3d and texture mapped, the 2d color job is nice. Was that done in Photoshop? It looks good.

ionanism-
thanks.! Im not much of a modeller ( cant even figure out how to find out where my poly count is :P ) Yeah the 2d is was done in photoshop 6.

Heres an update. Got the body sorta blocked out :

the guy with legs in his hand is great. a cool idea and the concept art is nice too.
im curious what you make out it in 3d.

i really like this idea, and i know its in its early stages, but you need to think about the size of the hands and the thickness of the stilts.as at the moment his grip wouldnt be big enough to hold the stilts. (you probably know this but im just pointing it out)

looks good so far tho

I really liked your concept for the wooden legged man. The model is coming along very well ;) and its still in the early stages!

For not being much of a modeler, you model is looking pretty good to me.

You say you use max 5 and don’t know how to find the number of polys you have?
Here is one way:
If you go over to the utilities panel in max (the hammer looking icon) there is a poly counter tool (you may have to click on the more button), it works pretty good, but make sure you convert you poly object into a mesh in order to get the accurate poly count in tris. I made the mistake on the last project of going off of the poly number and not the number of triangles; I got to spend a good long day cutting my polycount in half.

Thanks every one!

ionanism--- much appreciated! ummm so is tri's half a polygon? Now I cant wait to get home and see where my count is at! Thanks again!

great model man. Just think that the problem is not with the hands being too small... its the stilts being too thick. If you notice in your drawing, the actual sticks are thin and dominated by the relatively huge shoes... so i think if you make the stilts thinner, it would look less of a solid block...... and they would look more cartoony, also the shoes will now look bigger, hence the cartoony feeling to it all.... so just try making them thinner, and if you can show us a test render, that would be great.... Other than that, so far so good...

Hey wartorn thanks for the comment and crits. Yeah Im goin for more of a cartoony feel to it. Im lookin for a lighter feeling not so serious.

Cleaned up the face a bit more not a whole lot of time on it as I got married today! Whoo hoo!

Melmann, i think you misunderstood. What i meant to say was NOT that the problem is that its too cartoony. On the contrary, i like it cartoony like that. I was saying that the stilts are too thick and solid. And if you make them thinner, then it would look even more cartoony (better), and at least if the stilts are thinner, the guy can put his hands around them and they would fit. Also, maybe you would want to think of not making very straight stilts? They could be thin and crooked, not so vertical.... Just a thought, i think i it will add to the cartoony feeling youre trying to go with.

Hey, this guy is looking pretty cool. I know you are going for a cartoony, lighter feel but he could have some good potential with some texture work. :D

melmann
09-03-2003, 09:59 PM
rAndall,
Yeah Im gonna do more detail with the texture ...this is just flat for placement. Im gonna start that tonite :P THanks for the reply!
really appreciate it:)

This is one of my favorites in the challenge. This one inspired me to scrap the original idea I had and to push myself to be more imaginative.

I've seen melmann's website and he's a very good illustrator. Concept is very important to the final product and melmann is proof of that.

Great Work!

nice model and concepts and from looking at your web site the texture should kick as as well

ok 1 thing conver you model to edit mesh then do a polygon count because ediatble poly count aint verry accurate

a poly could have 3 sides 4 sides 100 sides and it will only count 1 poly but edit mesh counts the tri's in the model

any way :surprised

 nice model keep up the 3d you will go far.
