View Full Version : Rigging in AM?
GizmoMkI 08-15-2003, 12:57 AM I don't have much experience building skeletal rigs, and would like to know if there are any specific styles folks here recommend for biped/humanoid characters?
I'm also wondering if a rig is designed in a different application, like Maya, can the principles of its construction be easily converted to AM? I'm assuming such a rig can't be imported in any case.
I'm using AM 8.5L, in case that would limit possibilities.

If you want to import a rig made in another app that has expressions then you would need v10.5 (v8 doesn't have expressions).
AM has a full and flexible set of constraints though a lot is possible with them. In fact, I have yet to find a use for expressions.
If you look at the eggington rig (the one that comes with AM), you will see that it has auto-balance. This is done with an inginiouse arangement of bones and constraints.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, since I need the practice it's probably better for me to try and reconstruct the rigs by hand rather importing anyway.
The auto-balance techniques used in Eggington's work and Anzovin's Dennis rigs are what I find most intriguing though I'm a bit dense in understanding exactly how they work.
I've also been trying to get more familiar with creating pose sliders, though sometimes I miscalculate and wind up with the mesh stretching halfway across the screen. ;-)
I made a couple instructional videos a little while back that walk you through joint constraints and basic rigging.
You can find them on www.eggprops.com in the Software, Video Tutorials section.
Lots of people have commented that it has helped them understand the way rigging in AM works.

Many thanks, Wegg! I used to visit your site on a regular basis, but forgot to copy my favorites list when I switched to a different computer last year.

Yeah, great stuff there. Honestly, losing Wegg and his crew to Messiah was one of the worst things to happen to AM, IMHO. Balistics material mastery, Joe Cosman's amazing modeling chops and Wegg's all around ninja skills..... a sad day when they jumped ship.
Sorry, sometimes my geeky AM fanboy side comes out, but they do/did rock.
