Hello all,
My Dad, Don Ivan Punchatz passed away last Thursday, many of you might recognize this piece of art from the original DOOM game. He also designed the Logo.

He had an amazing career before that as well, He was the second Spectrum grand master after Frank Frazzeta . He was more than a great artist, he was a great man and taught so many people in the illustration world..and some like my self and Aaron Sims (one of my best friends) have brought our skills we learned from him to the CG world.

He moved into photoshop shortly after the Doom work.

He was also a CG society member- PUNCH69. He would never mention his life's work when posting, because he was so humble. Instead we would just complament and encourage posters. He visited this site often.

To learn more about his amazing life and career and see more of his work check this link out

I will miss you Dad, you are my hero.

My condolences to your family. Today i am wearing my doom tshirt actually: "IDDQD" cheat code for god mode, apparently we can not enter this code in real life and have to stay mortal. i love this game and it had a great impact on my younger adaulthood :) i had the cover art as poster hanging in my room.

with kindest regards,
Anselm

Aaron was/is one of my best lifelong friends and he wrote this about my father on his web site.

Don Punchatz - A Great Talent, Mentor, and Friend

Last week we lost an incredible talent, Don Ivan Punchatz. Not only was he a groundbreaking illustrator responsible for some of the most memorable images from the 70's and 80's, but his groundbreaking techniques and openness to teaching helped push me on my own journey. I worked for Don in the 80's and it was then that I really thought I could have a career doing what I loved. Thanks to him, I feel like I was open to my own eclectic range of influence. Don was a creative force of nature, a strong and honest mentor, a loving family man and a great friend. He will be missed.

Aaron Sims

We will be laying my fathers ashes to rest on Halloween...he would like that.

Thanks for all the notes of support.
