I think chess would be really cool - and not modeling a chessboard - but reinventing the idea - doing a character of a king or a castle or a bishop - or making a few of the interact... just the way people do Alice in wonderland's Card characters..
yeah I also kinda dig the Human Body cutaway which has been flying around for some time..

I think both of those are great ideas. The cutaway is probably gonna be the most hardcore challenge we get. I think for that one there should be separate categories for focusing on one part to keep it interesting. My concern would be that everyone would more or less have the same project if we all just do a generic human that's been cut away. Maybe not though. I would just like to see something added to that one. One idea I think I had earlier was to just do organic/humanesque cutaway. So maybe we can create a human-ish creature cutaway. Or maybe just do any mammalian (real or made up) cutaway. Then again, might be cool to have a more succinct challenge where we are all doing more or less the same thing.
I'm working on a character reel so I will keep leaning to wards character based stuff so I can kill 2 birds with one model! I'll still also keep pushing for doing 3d interpretations of old sea-monster illustrations that were all over old world maps. You know, the ones that people actually thought were real. Kind of like this style:

Anyway, guess that's my 4 or 5 cents worth.

I'd vote for the cut-away, I've been sitting on an idea for a sculpt for some time that would more or less fit this challenge.

Or from here, this is a great resource.
http://archive.nlm.nih.gov/proj/ttp/flash/gesner/gesner.html
and here for just straight seamonsters:

Man, sometimes I wish that we didn't understand so. Something to be said for purely creative explanations for strange sightings and occurrences.

damn I love that websie with Gesner's History.. so cool thnx for the link...
an allegory of something would also be cool - I love those old images and sculptures which represent something trhough a few symbols or things they're holding...

i like magda's chess idea....
you could do a knight taking down the king, or some other situation
and then there's the option of the custom chess set....

Human cutwaway is one I will savor for a special time.
I REALLY like your chess set idea, so much so, I will have the guys at the DSF to start doing some sketches.
I want to do the Ansel Adams challenge next, but I do have something special planned for the Holidays.

I been wanting to do a Norman Rockwell Challenge for a long time.
Talk about an artist I worship.
I just wanted to show a more different side of him, so people can get a taste of the depth he his work could reach.
His work during the civil rights war era is just freaking incredible.
Case in point:

Umm I don't know who Ansel Adams is (I'll google it after the post) and I'm not sure if ideas are still being thrown around, but I have one I'm going to voice anyway.
Topic: Morbid Christmas
(skeleton santas, demonic elves, mangy depraved looking reindeer, etc...)
^_^ After all it worked pretty well for Tim Burton.

Uh, I know you guys have already decided and having never had the courage to participate in one of these, I can't really say anything, but what about a Disney Character - I loved watching the 80s cartoon series (I used to LOVE He-Man haha) and I'm sure it'll attract loads of people if you guys do a Disney thing....just a though:)

Might I suggest creating an opinion thread when this challenge gets going? Rockwell can be quite political, and I foresee a lot of opinions flying around within the WIP threads. Might as well just throw all those opinions (they will be inevitable) into one thread. It'll keep The WIP's on topic and still give people a chance to try and make everyone else see the world their way :)

I would love to do a Rockwell model. Ansel Adams would be very nice too, but I think it'll be much harder to finish than any other modelling challenge before... And probably will request good knowledge in others 3d platforms such as 3dsmax, mental ray, vray.
Well, I'm looking forward to see a Rockwell challenge. For me, would be a very nice beggining here.

spaceboy412
11-13-2009, 03:25 AM
a rockwell style challenge would be interesting, i have a good idea of what i would do.
intervain, what are the characteristics that you would define as his style?
Intervain
11-13-2009, 03:34 AM
yeah a good question - after giving it some thought I came to a conclusion that for a strictly modeling challenge it's not such a good idea to do the style thing, because the characteristics are in the colour palette, composition and stuff that's achievable with texturing and rendering really... well a grouping of 1 or a couple of characters with some props to define them and with strong character features is very indicative of Rockwell and Leyendecker [who invented the style actually - and should be given due credit - sorry I had to say it 'cause people give Rockwell too much of it!] but yeah I guess for a modeling challenge just recreating his characters makes more sense..
spaceboy412
11-13-2009, 03:50 AM
well composition of a scene could still be modeled, for instance you create a diorama so your composition retains a viewing angle, but it can also be opened for full 3d viewing perhaps.
and to me rockwell is about taking a certain concept, simplifying it(vital essence little gelfling), adding some sugar, and obsessive detailing through photo reference, lol. these things can be modeled without colors and texture, its about posing, detailing, and storytelling right? honestly i've never been a fan of rockwell, he is a amazing painter but does nothing for me, leyendecker on the other hand i love.
Paul4wood
11-13-2009, 09:53 AM
Wow! Thanks for the edjumukation.
I have always loved Rockwell's work, especially his middle years, but I have to admit that I have remained pretty ignorant about Leyendecker. Now that you have put the spotlight on him I can see that Leyendecker certainly was the major influence behind most of Rockwell's work and what a prolific artist he was! Much of Rockwell's work appears to be a complete mimicry of Leyendecker's. Just look at this great collection of Saturday Evening Post covers:
http://jcleyendecker.blogspot.com/
Intervain
11-13-2009, 02:13 PM
precisely - thing is Layendecker's covers have much more life in them IMO and there's much more creativity in them as well, his New Year's covers make me giggle every time - I'd recommed this book that came out lately. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810995212/ref=s9_simz_gw_s0_p14_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=05B1SE8V4G521ASQWA1W&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846)
It's full of treasures :)
I still love some of Rockwell's work and I think his use of photography's great - he didn't just copy it blindly, he interpreted it. He definitely deserves appreciation, but I think so does Layendecker who has been swept under the carpet far too often

A rockwell challenge:love:. That guys got so much art its hard to keep track of it all. Layendecker's work I felt is more disney or tom and jerry-esque. In that its very animated. More so than rockwells. Still. I do like them both :arteest:.

Have you ever had a favorite actor that you've seen over and over again but never bothered to find out his name? This sort of reminds me of that because I'm very familar with Leyendecker's work but this is the first I've heard of his name. Can't say if I like either one better. The style from both is so endearing.
I've got to find a bigger version of this Rockwell, "Miss Liberty".

I have been checking the dates of Rockwells and Leyendecker's work. All the Rockwell pieces that I thought seemed so similar to Leyendecker's were actually painted by Rockwell first so who was mimicing who? :hmm:
They were both amazing.
I would like to change what I said about prefering Rockwell's work from his middle years. I love it all. Such great characterization and composition. Every one an animated story.

11-14-2009, 06:30 PM
Rockwell actually imitated Leyendecker and apparently asked him, when Leyendecker was already making covers for The Post [that was in 1915] who his business contacts were 'because he didn't know how to get into this paper... so Leyendecker, who was a good guy, gave him all... Rockwell started copying his style and got the contract soon after. Rockwell was way more competitive and determined to have public success while Leyendecker was more into just creating art, so eventually he was supplanted in the public eye. This is all - I love Rockwell but I really think Leyendecker should be recognized as a great artist as well and nowadays he's slowly starting to be. Most people, however, never heard of him yet.
Rockwell himself wrote a whole chapter in his biography on how he imitated Layendecker as a young artist - including his behavior as a person.
