View Full Version : Rigging noob needs help.
mightcouldb1 10-25-2009, 07:23 PM Hey I am a super rigging noob and need help doing one thing.
I am trying to build a car rig with suspension like this rig:
http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/3d-art/create-an-advanced-drifting-car-rig-in-3ds-max-day-1/
At about 22 minutes the guy uses a position contraint and a lookat constraint to make the axel. I am assuming that these are point and aim constraints in maya. But i cant get the same result. Does anyone have any ideas how to create this using the maya constraints or can it be done another way? Thanks!!!

Ok so I figured it out. But now Another problem has come about. How can I average the position of my object between where it is point constrained and aim constrained. I'm attatching an example of what I mean.

To keep the object centered positionally, you will need to point constrain the middle object to both ends. That way it will stay centered. Now I am assuming before you moved your pivot point to one of the ends of the center box. You will have to center your pivot and then point constrain to both targets, or make sure you turn maintain offset on, inside the option box for the point constraint. Then you can aim constrain the center object to just one or the other

Check that, you will have to center the pivot, otherwise it won't be able to pivot properly for aiming.

you may want to take a look at the book "Maya Visual Effects: The Innovator's Guide" pg 100-113.
This appears to be the exact problem that you are working on.
ok, took a look at the video... The tutorial In the book is close on some things, but what is going on in the video is mostly the Max Equivent to Set Driven Keys.
You can reproduce 95% of what is going on with Set Driven Keys.

Hello,
I also recommend (if you have time of course) on playing around with constraints (point, orient, etc node), utility nodes (clamp, plus minus, etc node), expressions, set driven key (SDK), and check the node(s) documentation (F1) there's a lotta cool rigging nodes there. When I was at VFS I used to play with those nodes, and the best way to learn is HAVE FUN and play around with 1 node every day.
Thanks,
Norbert
