I was just wondering what everyone's favorite renderer is. I hear so much about Radiosity, HDRI, GI...and all this but, i know very little about renderers outside of Maya renderer.

I want to start using Renderman and i hear a lot of good things about Final Render...

Whats your favorite and why?

As far as i know, Maya users only have access to Renderman, Mental Ray (which is included in Maya 4.5 and 5.0), the built in renderers: software, hardware, and vector, and any render that accepts RIB data. Brazil, VRay, and Final Render are still Max only, but some Maya versions are in the works.

You might want to figure out what your doing before you go looking for a proffesional renderer to use (*ahem* because Renderman is expensive if aquired by legitmate means). If your going to spend that kind of cash, just upgrade and use MR.

BTW your website in your sig is annoying. If you want people to go there make it a link so they dont have to manually take out the spaces.

Just click the little "web" button on the users tab right undernear the msg and you will be directed to the user website...
Try it out!

And let's hope Brazil and Final Render come quicks to maya...!

I am still happy with my Maya 4.0's default render :)

dang, sorry to upset with my sig....and your right, its a coming soon site. i havent had time to start it yet. the whole work 2 jobs and school full-time makes it a little ruff...hehe.

I have Mental Ray of course, but never really tried using it. I dont know the benifits of it.

I close friend of mine is actually a beta tester for Final Render (MAYA VERSION :applause: ) and says it is AMAZING. i have seen some renders that he did and its just stunning.

Does anyone know where i could find some tutorials on Renderman?

Doh!!
Think twice. Pause. Take a deep breath. Wait a day, then come back and by then I should have expunged all stupidity from whatever i wanted to say.

Renderman is pretty good for image quality and fast.

Mental Ray is really, really good for image quality and sloooooow.

I like both.

I'm using the Maya Default Renderer. Why? Well, it covers all my needs, supports fluids and paint effects. Do the Alias guys have a to-do list for mental ray? I'd like it to support fluids and paint effects. :)

I've seen picture render of beta of arnold for Maya, and it's damn good..
Obsiouly the good folks at Mikros Image France are beta tester on that, they have good experience on it and say that it's not that much tweaking it react like real light so if you want to back light some object you can just had a white plane that would reflect the light and control angle color intensity just like people do when lighting real set..pretty cool stuff I think.

Anyway if you've seen that Mc donald's comercial with the sort of little panda doll getting chase by a cat and saved by transformer it's done with it...very good stuff can't wait to try that myself

cheers

Don't ask me more info, I don't have sorry

Hrmmm..

It's probably exile for me but I've almost abandoned the Maya Renderer. I've gotten good results but sometimes the lighting takes more time than necessary to set up in order to fill in places where light is not bouncing.

Recently I've been using Lightscape, since I can't buy Vray yet. But I've been using the vray demo just these past two or three weeks.

The workflow is basically making everything in polys in Maya which is one attribute I adore about Maya, its modeling tools rock!! :buttrock:

Then from there I export them into LS or Max and texture and light them within the program. I won't model in Max though. For me I hate it. :thumbsdow

In personal samples the top view of an Interior is done with LS just to give an idea of where I'm at with that.

RenderMan is not expensive, it's free. It actually is just an API for 3D Software to communicate with renderers.

Renderers implementing this API are:

- 3Delight (Currently free)
- AIR from Sitexgraphics ($400/CPU)
- Aqsis (free, open source)
- Pixie (free, open source)
- PhotoRealistic RenderMan from Pixar aka PRMan ($3.500 for Pro Server Bundle. No price on PRMan-only license currently available on Pixar site. Maybe the same)
- RenderDotC ($595-$2.959/CPU)

To get your data into the renderer, you can either use the free Liquid plug-in, (which was also used by Weta for LOTR), MTOR from Pixar or MayaMan from Animal Logic.

finalRender is no match for any of the above renderers and I doubt it will become on during the next decade.

Cheers,

.mm
