View Full Version : Why does Area Light creat grainy renders?
sumeetkaur 10-24-2009, 07:49 PM Hi.I am lighting a scene in Maya with Area Light(emit specular off) as my base light . I rendered it in Mentalray with raytrace on. My problem is , the renders that I am taking out are very grainy. I increased the samples from 2(default) to 4 , but then also the problem persists.I even tried to increase and decrease the reflections and refractions in Render Global Window to see if this is the reason, but still the renders are very grainy. Somebody plz help me with this. Thank you in advance.:)

Increase image sampling.

I believe the graininess comes from setting the shadowing samples too low. To fix this, you need to set the "High Samples" setting to something like 24. You can find this setting in the Attribute Editor under Mental Ray > Area Light.
EDIT: You can also try to raise your shadowing samples in the light as well. Look under Shadows > Raytrace Shadow Attributes

Thanks Blot12345 and mister3d.
To my knowledge High sample means U sampling (length) and Low sampling means V sampling(height). Anyways playing with these values solved my problem. Earlier I was concentrating on the sample option found in the Render Global Window.:)

They are both important. First you increase your global samples till you get a good antialiasing, and then you adjust your local samples like shadow/reflection samples.
