View Full Version : PC rebooting
parallax 10-24-2009, 02:28 PM I've been having some trouble with my PC rebooting when it's under stress. A few months ago, i had the same problems which appeared to rooted in faulty ram. I got a new set, and while overall stability has improved, sometimes it still reboots under heavy stress. Especially when running Max.
I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software error. Might it be the 6 harddrives in my system?
specs:
Vista 64
Core i7 920
Asus P6T Deluxe V2
Corsair HX3X12G1333C9 12 GB
Antec TP-750 Blue 750 Watt, 20+24 Pins
Asus GeForce GTX 260 TOP 896 MB
6 HDD's. 1 external Firewire drive.
Any thoughts on this?

rebooting issues can many of times be attributed to a failing PS. Or possibly overheating.

If you've already replaced the RAM, the next likely suspects IMHO would be power supply, and CPU cooling -
You might try running this utility (http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php) to determine how hot your system is getting under heavy load (during long renders).
If your CPU cores are getting into the 90s, then you've got serious cooling issues. If the chipset is getting into the 100's then the same issue.
A failing power supply is harder to detect - but can certainly be the cause for system instability and reboots. Only way to know is to buy a new one and see if that helps...
There is an Event Viewer in Windows that might tell you something of value. Right click on My Computer and select Manage, Then look at the Event Viewer and the System event logs. If there are any unplanned/spontaneous reboot events, they should come up as yellow or red entries in the log. If so, then do a Google search for the event ID or error message and see if there is anything known about it...
Good luck -

I had the same exact problem with my Boxx workstation. It would only reboot at random time when under a load. I shipped it back to them and they said that each CPU had a dead core, so that replaced both CPU's. After a couple months of usage, it started rebooting again. Ive been way too busy with work to take the time to ship it back for repair, but the problem only seems to occur when im running at at 4Ghz. (which is where Boxx had it set). If I back it down to 3.8, it doesnt reboot.
You mention you have the i7 920. Are you overclocking by any chance?

Yeah - those Skulltrail systems have been a problem - Intel really screwed the pooch on that platform.
Man that sucks.
- We'll be happy to fix it when you can be without the unit for a bit.

Thanks guys,
I've been doing some tests, during heavy rendering the CPU temp doen't get higher then 87 C. VGA temp gets up to 66 C.
The weird thing is: the reboots happen during viewport interactions, not during rendering. And even on relatively simple scenes geometry-wise. Ie. i'm animating some splines with a flex modifier on it (3ds max).
I'm running stock speed.
My money is still on it being the PS... unplug as many of your HDDs and other add-ons as possible that use power from the PS and see if it stops (or at least lessens the amount of) rebooting.

Is there a way to test your PSU besides plugging in a new one? Last time i did a RMA it took 2 months.
