View Full Version : Q6600 still the most cost effective?
blazelet 10-24-2009, 12:26 AM I built 3 render boxes with the Q6600 last year because at the time that was the most cost effective approach.
Is that still the case?
I have the budget to build 4 more Q6600's @ about $550 each. Is there a new hot processor that you can get for the $200 range that beats the Q6's?

Well, the best processor out now I would say is the i5 750 for price/performance. Its $200 on newegg and is quite a bit faster than the q6600. My q6600 is overclocked to 3.0 GHz and gets a score of 12,000 on cinebench. I dont imagine you would be overclocking your render machines so they would be at 2.4GHz and thus quite a bit slower so it would get a score of around 9,400. The i5 gets around 14,500 according to review sites I've seen. the step up i7 860 gets around 16,000. You can basically translate these scores into the time it takes to render a scene. The higher the number, the quicker the render. some motherboards for the i5 and i7 can be bought for around $100, so they are a fairly good buy.
you may be able to get something on the AMD side similar, but I dont think there is much difference.

I hadn't seen the i5 on any of the benchmark tests - but as I read reviews they say it's the new Q6600 - which is exactly what I'm looking for. If I can find a cheap mobo with onboard video then I think I have a plan ...
Thanks for the tip :)

Here are benchmarks that confirm that in motion graphics the i5 750 benchmarks at about 30% faster than the Q6600 - which is significant.
Thanks again

My i7 920 node is around 110% faster than my q6600 (both stock). My overclocked 920 (4.2ghz) is...well, faster ;)
Both with XP64 - Lightwave 9.6 - Q6600-4gb RAM, i7 920-6gb RAM
I believe that the i5's are the same as the i7's but with hyperthreading disabled so you only get 4 physical cores rather than the 4 cores + 4 virtual cores.

If you can I'd go for the i7 920's. The hyper threading DOES help.
