View Full Version : The Sideshow - Character - markw7

This sketch is based on a couple photos by Joel-Peter Witkin, "Harvest", which I found in a calendar from the Mutter Museum, and "The Glass Man", along with what I think sideshow people call "a gaff", in which animal corpses are spliced together with other inanimate objects and makeup effects to look like the remains of a creature. So "the plant man" might be exhibited like the remains of a mummy or mermaid. But maybe playing dead is just part of the act...

Hope someone can let me know if this is within the guidelines. Maybe he's too much of a "monster" or something...

I do hope this is within the rules, looks like a very cool idea to me.

the rules do seem to have been relaxed a little since we started so there's a very good chance.

thanx guys!

I was worried there for a second, no responses and all. Encouragement feels good. Looks hard, huh? Probably more difficult than anything I've made before.

Looks like you're in for some pretty tricky modeling. It sure will be a very impressive piece of work if you can pull it off!

Finally took a shot at this after the minor hiccup of a 24 hour blackout. Thanks Canada.

Needs work, of course, but its only my third head and my first stab at sub-Ds.

Still working on the basic geometry:

He needs lots of things: hands, lots of carving away at, veggies, a prop...

You've managed to give him a very pleasant face. Looks very serene, sort of.

One thing that does not look quite right to me, is the back of his head - from the neck and up to the top of his head. Maybe check some more references, or maybe this was the shape you wanted  Just a friendly suggestion! :)

James: Thanks for the crit. I'm entirely open for more. Yeah, the skull is at the wrong angle or something. Also, I think my point pushing has resulted in some undesirable indentations around his neck, but I think there won't be a neck in the end anyway. He is meant to look serene, so I'm pleased to hear it. I think he's dead, and just being propped up for audience consumption.

You should check male proportion

This one for the mesh structure (http://www.3dluvr.com/syomka/anna/wires/) ref (http://www.bobotheseal.com/portfolio/EF2/)

good ref (http://www.stevengiesler.com/)

Thanks Pikmin. Appreciated. The wires and the Steven Geisler Matrix models are great resources. I assume the concepts and renders are the pro way of displaying character work. I loved tyhe uv layout in the female model sheet. I had every intention of starting off anatomically correct, just didn't quite get there. I'll use these refs on my next figure.

Struggling with the character rigging so I switched to working on the chair to prop him up. I looked high and low for an alternative to JamesMK's wheelchair photo but all my google searches returned to his reference, so I decided to use it but to blend it with gears and things from old coffee grinders and ice cream makers. Apologies to James.

Worked past the deadline, couldn't get it done. Not too happy with the current state of things, but I'll post some images anyway. Setting, textures, paintfx simply first attempts. Pose was meant to be christ-like, but it could be read as mastabatory, unfortunately. Maybe I'll continue it in the WIP section...

Well, that wheelchair turned out a very interesting piece of machinery anyway. Nice one!
