i don't think you can go from ple to regular maya. at least it would make sense not to be able to as then studios could download a free maya ple version for their modelers, animators, texture artists etc... and then export the scene out of ple and into a couple copies of maya to render out without the ugly watermark.

yeah you have a good point there. But you also have to think.. well we here at Alias should make a plugin so that all the people that have downloaded our PLE version and have decided to buy a full working version can carry there projects over to there new software purchase and continue to work on there stuff instead of getting frustrated knowing that all there hours of time they have logged into there PLE version learning just to find out that all that time was wasted creating stuff and saving files just to save money for a full working version are a waste.
I mean its kinda of like working in a program for years creating graphics just to find that you need to upgrade your software ut sorry all that stuff you have created for years doesn't work in this new upgrade which means you have recreate everything you have done which means you have to recharge clients which means they get mad and take there business else where.
does this make any sense??

Before you spent all this time creating in PLE you should have read the FAQ. It has been stated from the start...
No. The commercial version of Maya software cannot not read Maya Personal Learning Edition files. Files created with the Maya Personal Learning Edition are for non-commercial use only.
That from the PLE FAQ (http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/faq.shtml#maya_read_ple)

It is in the FAQ, but I think AW should rethink this.
A good solution for everyone would be if they let users submit their PLE files to them, and then send them back as Maya files.
This is a service that SideFX provides for Houdini (apprentice) users, and would discourage those seeking to abuse the free PLE license.

I agree with victor, I mean look at it this way. A client sends you a peice of artwork done in Photoshop LE to be used on a printed peice. Well you can still open it in Photoshop 6 or 7 or 8 ...... nope wait they don't have 8 yet.... haw wait till x-mas then it will be out.... back to what I was saying. Now the photoshop thing is a good example why shouldn't you be able to do that with maya its still there program its not like your creating something so it can be imported into another program. Plus I agree on maybe setting something up to where you send them your files and they convert them. But I mean I am using a PLE version at home and a student copy at school, now I create something at home in my PLE and I say wow that looks cool then I take it to school to work on it and I get "Sorry You Can't Do That"

Not that I mind the support, but the Photoshop LE thing is a bit different.
Photoshop LE is a stripped down version of Photoshop, and is basically a low cost image editor that can create (and open most) PSD files.
Maya PLE is basically a full version of Maya for free with one restriction: You can't use it for real work, since you can't get models or final quality renders out of the program.
But with that said, I still think it would be great if AW provided a service to those who spend time to learn with the PLE, so that they wouldn't have to completely start over when moving to the full version.
A one-time-per-license (maybe unlimited for schools?) conversion for all of your PLE files when making the switch seems very reasonable.
I'm currently trying to get someone to start working with the PLE (if I can find 4.5 for the Mac), and this is a big concern.
