hi,guys i start to model a head ,follow a lot of tutorials ,but i find
little tutorial show how to smooth the surface, and one of my friends told me i should use normal/soften ,
i tried this ,but there a lot of wrinkle occured.looks bad,
so ,i think there must be some problem ,can anyone show me how to slove the problem, smooth the head and add details to it.
thanks

what's the problem? "modify >> convert >> poly to subd" or "polygon >> smooth" isn't working? I'm not sure I understand, are you just starting with maya, and you don't know how to smooth? (if so, use one of the two methods above) or are you trying to keep it low poly? :surprised

mmm, thanks,
i really don't know how to smooth or have little skill of doing that.
the mothed you told me does works but ,but can you show me how to adjust it. when i got a low poly i want to make it smooth and add some details to it,but by using poly/smooth simplely i can't get the effect i want, i just want to know some steps to make it.

Have you try these methods (http://www.learning-maya.com/modeling.php#organic1) ?

Can you upload the scene?

hey!!:wavey:
if you are going for the high poly look then it's a simple case of going to Edit>convert>poly to subD.
now you can select a=points on the head and move them around, but still keeping a smooth curve between the points. if y0ou need to get finer detail just right click on a point then goto refine. that will give you more points to play with. check out the help files for more info or just follow DeathBrain's link.
hope that helped some.

hmmm... just read your post again.
are you saying that you want a high poly surface but a low poly cage? this is seen in many max tutorials but as far as i'm aware isn't in maya as an option. ( i could be wrong, i'm still on 4.0)
if it is in maya now, look for a smooth proxy option.
if you have 4.0 like me then get a plug-in called Connect PolyShape. ( sorry don't have a link, but it should be on www.highend3d.com) that could be what you are looking for.
again, hope that helps.
cheers!!

I assume your just learning maya... but follow my instructions carefully, and you'll have a low poly controlling a high poly. :D
one) first, select your model, and press "Ctrl + d" to duplicate your model, then press "w" to select the move tool, and move the second model a few units to the right.
two) now, goto "window >> general editors >> connection editor" to open up the connection editor, select the first model, and press the button "reload left", now select the second model, and press the button "reload right".
three) finally, scroll down on the left, and find "outmesh" in the list (a bit more than half way down I think) and select it, and then scroll down on the right side and find "inmesh" in the list, and select.
Now, if you change something on the first model (the primary one) then the second one will update... which means, you can now select the second model, goto "Polygons >> smooth" (with either 1 or 2 iterations, depending on how smooth you want it) and now you'll see an editable low poly on the left, and a high poly updating on the right.
hope you can follow that...I can tell english isn't your first language, just tell me if you don't understand, and I'll get you a video that shows how to do this.
Cheers,

Sorry if this will make more confusion to you.
If you want your low poly and smoothed poly at the same place, you need to create 2 display layer.
You can use the layer section of your channel box (bottom right) to create 2 new display layer.
Put your smoothed poly on one layer, and put low poly model into the other one. RMB clik on the low poly layer will give you access to its layer attributes, uncheck shading, which will give you only wireframe of the low poly even if you are in shaded mode.
For the layer that has smoothed polygon, set it to Referrence, which mean you can't select it but still shaded.
With this setup you can have both low poly and smoothed poly sharing the same space without necessity to have 2 panes in your modeling view. Maybe it is easier for you doing modeling.
This is something that I get from CPS mel script.
Best regards

I don't know if I am having the same problem as flyingkongque, but I am new to Maya also and from what I understand you dont need to worry about tangency when working with polygons. So how come when I smooth my head I get a crease down the middle? Should I be able to connect both sides of my head first. Its getting really irritating.
flyingkongque,
1. If you have Maya Unlimited, you can smooth the polygon model by converting it to subdiv (e.g. Modify->Convert Polygon to Subdiv). Then choose the object and press Alt + a for the attribute editor. In the attribute editor, in the first tab polytoSubdShape, click on the Subdiv Surface Display and you can adjust the subdiv resolution. The higher the resolution, the more smooth or curved the model becomes.
2. If you don't have Maya Unlimited or have it but do not want to use Subdiv, then select your object, go to Polygons->Smooth option box and change you subdivision levels to say 3. Then press Smooth or Apply. Then if you want to change the subdiv levels at any time, choose the object, press Alt+a for the attribute editor. In the tab polySmoothFace, you can adjust the Subdivision Levels to the value you want. Including 0 which will make it the same as the initial object.
3. If you want to model polygon and smooth model at the same time, use this tutorial http://www.safakoner.com/05_source/01_tutorial/02_tpsbs.htm

thanks everybody,
your mothod is cool,
and i converted it to subdiv ,by using this way i got the effect i want,
but i still don't know how to use smooth proxy,
and the question come to me , is the smooth tool in poly modelling useful?since i can got a smooth surface without useing poly/smooth and poly/smooth proxy
