View Full Version : UVSphere or Icosphere

I'm just planning to build a sphere to cut with a plane and use only half of it. to do a logo arrangement for my company. I intend to play with texture nodes to 'stick' the logo on the outside of the half-sphere face. As I am a rookie with Blender what do you sugest me to use a UVSphere or Icosphere?

In whose cases do I should use one or another?

I think it's a lot simpler for you to use a UVSphere.
You can use UVSpheres if you intend to edit the mesh / use subsurf
Icospheres are often used to create effects/if the mesh isn't edited. They often need less polygons.
Of course, it's not that simple...
But if you're a "newbie" you'll certainly prefer UVSpheres ;)

Just use a UV Sphere and delete the vertices on one half. Then just us UV mapping to place the logo.

Another reason to go with a UVSphere over an Icosphere is that UVSphere produces mostly quads (4 sided polygons) and an icosphere produces triangles (3 sided polygons). Quads are better for modeling than triangles. Operations like edge loops, for examples, have problems with triangles but do well when the model has quads, making the mesh much cleaner.

Probably quite obvious, but if you apply a sub-D(subsurf) modifier to the icosphere,
it will be all quads, as Pangloss mentioned though,
each sphere is a little better suited for specific things.
For an example, I'd never model an Eye-ball out of an icosphere,
more work than it worth it. :)
