View Full Version : WIP - Soldier Robot
miketche 08-14-2003, 07:29 AM I have a scene in mind for this guy, but I thought I would post him here to try and get any feedback before I work on the rest of the image.

hey looks pretty good, but maybe ther's a bit too much of that soft rust (which usually wears off to a thin harder deeper more red coloured thin layer of rust when there's so much).
Yeah I like him too, but I dont like how much rust he has, and I think he needs a few more details. Other than that good job :)
He reminds me of something, but I cant put my finger on it, lookin forward to that scene, keep up the good work :D.

I like the design and I LOVE that smoke (how'd you do it?) but I'm gonna have to agree with these guys about the rust. Looks like a bit too much. -- 3d_e

I know I know you get the point about a lot of rust but perhaps just inverting the rust with the silver would be just right. Also since you did say you just had a scene in mind perhaps he is coming out of some type or water or liquid that would explain all the rust. His eyey lights up and he is "alive" again and sits up out of some type of water holding conatiner. Just wanted to throw out some ideas. Off to a good start!

Thanks for the comments. I guess I'll have to work on the rust. I initially invisioned him more brown with just a little clean metal, but I guess it doesn't work. The scene I have in mind really has nothing to do with water I just wanted him to look worn.
The smoke was done in post in Photoshop.

Cool!
Add a few barnacles to him and put him in a big fiishing net with fish and oter sea critters being lifted onto a boat.
Hey! I caught me a big one!

Ok, here's a new version. Changed the texture and added a few additional details.

sorry for not replying Miketche, It got down to the bottom before I noticed your update :).
Its looking great, the decreased rust and added details do worlds of good for the aesthetic (is this the right word?) Appeal. And the new lighting makes a lot of difference as well. I remembered what it reminded me of too... When I was young there was a show called crash dummies, it was short lived and horrible. But they did manage to put out a set of really cheap action figures with interchangeable parts. I got one of the bad guys that became my favorite action figure for along time and it had about the same proportions of your robot :P. Weird huh lol it took me a really long time to remember why this seemed so familiar.
Well good work :), looking forward to future updates...

Alright now we are talking. I like the new tex a lot more. I think you should add some grease or stains in the knee joints. They are the only thing clean. Good update!

Hi miketche,
I really like your robot. It has this cheap japanese
TV series look that I always liked. As for the texture
I think its not looking like rusted metal but more
like as someone has tried to paint rust. The rust
of your robot has to much highlighting. Look at real
rust and you will see it swallows most of the light.
As I have said the robot itself is really cool.
keep on
Bob
hmm I actually liked that first one better.
even if it was a little odd I did like the general look of it.
anyway to notch dude keep up the good work

I like the new rust alot! the knees do need a touch of ware, as does the eye. It seems almost cartoony, out of place. If that look is what you want, good! i've been wanting to model something like this for a while, this will be a good reference.. very nice!

This thread just goes to show you that you can't please all the people, all the time. Alot of valuable input here but ultimately, you have to make yourself happy. Lookin good! -- 3d_e

Wow! what a lot of great replies. I wasn't expecting that.
Anyways I've already begun work on the final image and it should be completed soon. I hope you'll be able to recognize my robot in it because it is going to be a lot different than these test images.
