some weeks ago there was a thread - must have been in the "Gallery/Finished Work" - also was on front page - for a demoreel by Simon Mills that fascinated many people for its precise way the rigging and controll of the characters was done: Simon Mills Thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71553&perpage=15&pagenumber=1)

now me little greenhorn sat down and tried to find a way how to controll the pose mixer with a null, so to get a grafik interface, or letīs call it a 2dimensional slider. the result would give a much more intuitive way to controll your character ...

the setup I made is quite simple but it has the potential to make rather complex interface of a facial rig etc. easily controlable.

I used a null that is connected to the sliders of the motion mixer through xpresso. the null is kept in a certain area ... moving it further would not have more effect on the face.

feel free to look at the file, comment or improve it:

- rightmouse/save target -

... works great with cappucino

Hell, I've barely started here, but I know that this is doable. I just did a very simplified version of this to control a complicated set of motions on a pressure hatch I'm animating. I *loved* that reel by Simon, and that sort of rigging looks like a very entertaining challenge. I'm a ways away from working with characters though. I'm excited to see what ya'll can create.

Come to think of it, I just got Paul Everett's Pro Pack, and his deformers have that crazy slider in the upper left corner, a circle on a line. How the hell does he do that? Anyone know? Might that be applicable here or is it too difficult to set up?

that's done through the C++ SDK

Wow that is awesome. I was hoping and thinking cinema could do that expression. That is a great job there man. Nice work. I spyed simon mills thread a while back and was amazed. This is the kind of character animation i would like to be able to eventually do. Thanks for the post.

Hey, this is kind of weird. This is how I setup the sliders for the character rig I have been working on for the past few weeks. I used this method to setup visual sliders for the fingers of the character and its proving to be very intuitive.

I was thinking on using this method for the facial setup of the character too. Its really a great way to control certain aspects of a rig. Well, anyways thought I would post to agree that this is a great way to setup rigs.

I would post an image of what Im talking about but with file limit size CG Talk has the image would be like 50 x 50 pixels. Sorry

yep!

this kind of controll is a heap of work, but it gives a rather flexible and intuitive way to mix and animate several aspects of a character. but not for all parts. face mimiks f.e.
