Mainly depends on what you mean : Max or more specifically VIZ are very able tools for architectural design, for mechanical design you have a full range of very specialised (and expensive) tools. Rhino, Solid Thinking and Wavefront Studio Tools are also very good tools (Studio Tools is VERY expensive especially the top of the serie) Just not sure you ask this question in the right forum :)
