View Full Version : Character Studio in the Curve Editor...

Hey all...

I posted this question about a week ago, and still...to no avail.

I am animating a character running. The character starts in the down position (as in a race), sets to a middle position, and then takes off.
From the first down position to the middle position is the problem, but overall a biped problem.

The down position starts at frame 1. The middle position is frame 15 (so half a second). From frame 1 to 15 I need to go into the Curve Editor to set the tangent.

Normally I could take the first key, set it to a easing out etc...

When working with a biped, I cannot affect any of the tangents. It is like they are locked.

Anyone know why this could be happening?

SOME BACKGROUND----
---------------------------------------------

I started by making a biped, then mixing together several bips (which i created) in the motion mixer. Then mixed-down to the biped (making key-frames). This mix (keys now) I created starts on frame 30. So from frame 1 is down, frame 15 up a bit, and then at frame 30 my mixdown keys start. From 1 to 30 I need to freeform animate.

I have done the tutorials that ship. And love the help files.

hopefully someone has answers to all these questions.

thanx all...

could be that your question isn't very clearly worded.

as far as i know, you can't take character studio into the curve editor unless you are using version 4.

Hey there...

Thought I might have been a bit confusing. There is an example of my problem. Grab the vertical COM on the biped in this file. You will see a key at frame 15 and 20. Now open up the curve editor and select the COM's vertical track. The blue track has a hump from frame 15 to 20. I want that line in the curve editor to be straight. The "hump" causes the biped to rise a bit, sink under its origin point, and then to the origin point.

I know this is happening in a fraction of a second in this example, but I want to be able to work in the curve Editor.

I am running CS 4 which I bought as a bundle with Max 5.1

Here is a link to the sample file.

thanx :)

Thank you for your help, or any time you put in to look at this file.

Snowfly-

I know that part of the fix now is in the TCB controller. I turned the tension and the continuity down, left the bias at the 25 default. This seems to be the way to control the Curve Editor, in order to set the type of tangent from one key to the next.

Let me know if this is the proper way to do this, but again I seem to solve my own problems, after I hack them thru for a week, and talk thru them.

Am I lonely at work? yes...you could say that.

Yes, TCB is what you need to adjust. I prefer to work with the Bias to achieve flattened curves. When Bias is set to 0, it is similar to Bezier Slow In. When Bias is set to 50, it is like Slow Out. If you want your keys to be like Bezier's Linear setting, then you can increase your Tension to 50 or decrease Continuity to 0. TCB is great for rotational transforms, but can be a little difficult to understand, especially when you're interested in positional data. Play around with the different settings and see how they affect your biped's trajectory. You'll soon get a feel for what works best for you.

If I understand you correctly you should be able to turn tangents on by editing the CS ini file

go to the plugcfg directory in your 3dsmax installation, open up the biped configuration settings, change the following from this

AWB_ShowTangents=0
AWB_EnableTangentsOnOpen=0

to this

AWB_ShowTangents=1
AWB_EnableTangentsOnOpen=1

You are essentially just turning them on by changing the 0 to a 1, I don't know why they ship off by default I assume that there may be a stability problem, but who knows.... try it out and see what you think.

good luck

Spacegroo-

Thank you for the explanation. Will play around with that...a lot. And now read the help file concerning the TCB rollout. I don't recall working with curves in any of the tutorials from the CS4 Tutorial Book. Hmmm...some things you just learn on your own, and with the help of other CGers.

Robioto-

Will give that a go right now. Let you know how it turns out. Essentialy if I am understanding this right, the TCB controller rollout (spinners and all - bias etc...) control the Curve Editor? And the Curve Editor does not have this turned on? Anyone have any clues as to why? hmm...

alright thanx again all...thought CS was Gimped for a while.

peace,

Robioto-

I changed the config file in the Plugcfg, played around for about 2 minutes, and Max dumped to the desktop. You may be right about instability. Maybe I will revert back, and just use the TCB controllers.

I appreciate the help tho. Will leave it on for a bit, till it gets really annoying!

peace,

Giant, Discreet ships CS with great HELP manual. All tricks that other people wrote are in HELP(even how to turn on tang. changing biped.ini). Take a look. :thumbsup:

Licanin- I have not played around with this issue in a while (self-slap)...but I received CS with Max 5.1, and all that came in my CS Box was the tutorial book. I do not recall a help booklet. Are you refering to the Help key once inside the program??
sorry if I am confused (early in the morning)...

thanx for the input tho,

Giant

I'm confused. I changed the line of script in the Biped.ini file, but I still can't get tangents to show up. Infact I can't get Biped keys to show up in the curve editor, just the workbench. I can't find anything, but a passing statement about tangents in the help files. Nothing that actually tells you how to use them with Biped. Can one of you guys help me out? Thanks...
