hey whats goin on? Im George. I'm sort of new to 3d...but ive used a few 3d programs already....but like Im trying to say, im no expert. I want to learn so much more....the 3d world fascinates me.
My problem is this.....I'm using a Acer laptop which i just bought, wasting ALL the money I had left on it. But theres a HUGE problem....NO 3D program has worked on it correctly. I've tried Daz Studio 2.0, Daz Studio 3, Cinema 4D, Poser 6, and Lightwave 9 on it...and they ALL run EXTREMELY slow...making it impossible for me to even POSE my characters....and when i try rendering ANYTHING or load MORE then a base model...the program either crashes or takes extremely long to render OR pose...RENDERS finish in about 30 minutes (fastest render speed ive gotten). I got into Lightwave, and even being alot HARDER then Poser or Daz...I friggin LOVED the program, but now it wont even launch :(.
My laptop has 250 gb's of hard drive, 2 gb's RAM, my processor is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500, and uses OpenGL 1.1 (impossible to update to a higher version...my video card supports OpenGL 1.0 up to OpenGL 2.0, but the driver DOESNT support it.)
What I want to know is....WHAT program (new or old versions) would work on my computer? I'm looking for a program that would give me good quality renders for human modeling (making people) and environment modeling (for scenes)...I dont care of it gives me photo realistic renders, I only care about a program that will run. And just in case....I used Poser 6, and the renders were ok, compared to Daz Studios or later Poser versions, but something like that I would take. Again, I dont care if the program is a old version....thanks guys and I hope u can help.

Simply, 3d software is not designed to run on low-end laptops. Some mid-range laptops will run the software ok and some people work a lot on high-end ones but it's like using a motorbike for a haulage firm...sure it's light-weight and easy to park but it's not designed for the purpose you need.

Also bear in mind that laptop's get hot when pushed to the limit...using a laptop to render regularly is a sure-fire way of burning out the processor.

So true :) I do all my work on my Toshiba notebook, and i need to wedge it up with a book to get enough air flow, or it just overheats!

If you want to do 3d on your notebook, i would say you would need to get either an ATI or nVidia 3d acellerator. Ive got a pretty decent ati one, and have no probs with maya.

your main problem is..

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500

its a SLOW accelerator.

however that said.. zbrush will work fine, but you will need some sort of wacom tablet. ( theres some nice ones for $100-200 that will work fine.

The Intel video chip is absolutely killing your performance, but I get the feeling that it's even worse than that... is this a Netbook that we are talking about or is this just a really old laptop? What processor does this computer have?

3D programs are not lightweights when it comes to computer resources... you gotta pay to play, so either this laptop was recently purchased without researching what you needed to run the programs you wanted to, or this laptop is too old/too under powered.

I also have a hunch that this computer might be infested with some unwanted software like viruses or spyware, cuz even an underpowered computer shouldn't be acting quite as badly as you are making it sound.

The only advice I have is turn off the gfx card in the 3d apps. For cinema 4d, hold shift while the program loads and it will use your CPU instead of the gfx card.

Hey guys sorry it took so long to write...I just got my internet hooked back up today. Thanks for all the advice...but for right now im gonna have to suck it up, cause i wasted all my cash on the laptop (its a Acer laptop *pretty small*....model: AO751h...processor is Intel Atom CPU Z520 @1.33 GHz)...
and again...thanks

So you bought a Netbook instead of a real laptop thinking that you were going to run demanding 3D apps on it.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Well, i am using my Atom Netbook with CINEMA 4D, not for real work but if a question pops up on the forums and i need to open the app and check something, it works pretty well.
For real work 3D it's in no way suitable nor recommended.

Yeah sorry to break it to you. You bought a neat toy/web browsing/ letter writing laptop, but some photoshop doodling, but a low power 1.3GHz cpu, utterly unsuitable for 3d work, im surprised it even launches properly.
